Mosby 355
Part I Been hunting a few days this week and have had some good success. This was a spectacular week to be honest. On Sunday a buddy of mine who I haven't seen for several years gave a call and wanted to meet up. Tanner and I were already loading dogs to see if we couldn't run some fox to the shotguns. We told my buddy where to meet us and we waited till he arrived and went off to hunt the briars along the river (as usual). We walked a good half mile and the dogs weren't even acting interested. Darkness spent ten to fifteen minutes in a fresh dug sette but nothing was home. Shite hunt we figured, but the weather was good and sunny so all was not wasted. Better than sitting indoors and wishing for better dogs. On the way back Tanner's Tipper bitch lifted off the ground winding, then hit the brush hard as a hog. The race was on and the dogs were squealing. We had a few pups under a year with us along with Tipper, Magua and Old Bob (Booby McGee as I call him). The track was short and sweet, not more than five minutes and then silence. Tanner hopped up on an outlook and there were Magua and Tipper intently searching a tree. Sure enough there were three coons up there. Tanner had to give his impression of the dogs squirming with anticipation at the bottom of the tree. He didn’t know it but it was funny as heck. He reminded me of a grandma in carharts and a baseball cap doing the boogie. The young dogs wouldn't sit tight at the tree. They were still running around like dingbats. We called them over and tried getting them to smell the trunk and make the connection but it wasn't happening. So I blasted the smallest coon with the shotgun. That got the pups attention. Tanner and I discussed the pain of hunting these tiny coons and decided to weed out the extras and only leave the strong. So I dropped the second smallest coon; much to the young dogs’ pleasure. We all had places to go so we called it a hunt at that. Part II Next evening Tanner calls. He tells me that the weather was so windy and the snow was threatening, therefore, no work for Tanner in the morning. I thought, “Hell, I'm sleeping in with weather like that.” Tanner showed up and made me get my ass out of bed. To be continued... Quote Link to post
