Berkutchi 0
Same thing was said with Harris's,Red Tails etc being compared to Goshawks as they're in pursuit of the same quarry. And the same with our native Peregrine/Merlin being compared to non native falcons and hybrids, variety is the spice of life Quote Link to post
Berkutchi 0
But could the alien species be used over here as good as our native bird's .... .. i think not .. ..Millet Well you fly a exotic Harris?,and look at the myriad of North American hawks such as Harri's,Red Tail's and Ferruginous etc.Harris's are the most popular hawk in the sport and not just for novices. And for hunting crows hybrids are more proficiant than straight peregrines."Exotics" have carved a very big niche in falconry in the UK.Harris and Red Tails etc have the advantage over Goshawks within rabbit hawking by being able to wait on in hilly terrain etc as they are more versitile so in that manner they out perform the "natives",but at the end of the day you use what you prefer and to your ability. jasper65 6
when you think about it all the Indigenouse species have everything any Falconers should ever need, Goshawks, Sparrowhawks, Peregrines, Merlins and Goldies, all these will suit any of our needs to what ever quarry and land suits the birds flying abilities, Harris's are a cracking Rabbit hawk and certainly mug a good few game birds, but for a flat out tail end chase and bind on a Game bird forget it! they still catch em by following them in or on the rise but sprinters they're not.... I'm not slateing a Harris in anyway as I love the bloody things for their sheer Inteligence and temperament, but these days for me its not getting 100's in my kill book its all about trying to negotiate a decent slip which will result in a decent flight and hopeing the bird will gets its prize at the end of it, I have seen some pretty decent Harris's and read about them too mainly from the lads on here, I also have no doubt a Harrisman will get out and take a good few more head than me either from waiting on or from trees and the odd stuff off the fist, But a Gos unless you want it to self hunt out of trees is flown straight off the fist at all times, no height advantage whatsoever just sheer wing power and accelleration! its a total waste to see any Gos just flown at fur, to get the sharpness and fittness out of them get them on Game birds and other sporting feather... I once saw a old video of a P/R Trainned Gos going up on the soar, basically it was out of control! but when something was kicked up underneath it, it belted down in a full wing shut much like a Spar on the soar and Hunt..... Berkutchi 0
Arent these stunning! Black & White Hawk Eagle, stand out at a field meet. But at the end of the day what ever said about "exotics" id still love a pair.. .And at the end of the day im also interested in raptor propigation/aviculture and from a commercial point of view they are worth having a pair if you knew how much they go for! Like i said id love a pair and not just from a falconry point of view as the thread has turned, after all many people keep exotic owls/raptors just for breeding and interest as their hobby....... jasper65 6
No doubt about it these birds would sell no probs! Andy Reeve down this way was breeding Gabar Goshawks mainly for the exotic Market , to be Honest I never would beleive they would sell aswell as they did!! but he was taking deposits well before eggs was being layed, having said that you could say that about Harris's and Goshawks in the late 's and 90's, the problem now is flying Imprints has opened up the Market for birds that was otherwise considered difficult to fly and breed, subsequently the market gets flooded and prices have dropped....
