Looks like a standard Mink Trap, mate. If so, it'll likely have 1" mesh. As Jonh said, mice will go through that two abreast. No problemmo. Good few rats too could get out through it. Young ones especially. And it's those ye may well be getting.

If the door snaps shut and locks down, distance from that treadle will mean no rat'll be fast enough to fire the trap and then nip back under the door. They're not James Bond.

What bait ye using? Try crunchy peanut butter, smeared onto that pan. Give them some reason to sit there and work it, see?

If ye reckon it's mice getting to it and firing it? F*cking easy, isn't it? Set mouse traps and take them out! Use flower poys or sandwich boxes to cover the traps up and make a little hole at the bottom for the mice to investigate. 'Gang Set', that's to say put down four or half a dozen, close to that trap. Keep at it and ye'll soon descimate any localised mouse population. Probably Wood Mice. Then that leaves ye clear to se what happens next and consider ye options.

Saying that though, I've always prefered to use Rat Traps for rats. 5/8th" mesh, see? Makes a differance ;)

Anyway, keep at it and let us know how ye get on. Ye'll work it out.
