Terrier/ bull blood in ped whippets

Recommended Posts

been reading a few old whippet books and others lately. One says that many generations ago the whippet had a longer coat but due to racing a shorter coat was required..... Introducing terrier blood added the gameness and 'do or die' attitude to the breed....,

Now in this book there is a picture if a whippet from the 60's. It's in exactly the same pose as a picture I have of my whippet bitch..... I compared the photos and the older photo seems to have a smaller head with a longer face by a long way....... Whereas by whippet seems to have a shorter, wider and generally bigger head.......

My bitch looks to have a very long face with a small head until you look at this photo.....

Is this the result if the terrier blood added and did it happen with working pedigree whippets and not just racing non peds?

Late 60's and early 70's in my area bull and collie were put to the non ped whippet as you call them to fortify the breed ...they were getting to be very *fine* dogs as in light and tall and needed substance. Can remember my mate in 72 having a 1/4 staff x whippet which was a b*stard off the track and never turned it's head on it ...good open class dog in its weight class
