Out This Morning

Recommended Posts

Went out for a couple hours this morning for a bit with the ferrets and my little bitch xe, ferrets first time out with them now being 8 month old and what a surprise it was!

first set has never proven much good in the past and seems times haven't changed in our favour today, its a 4 holer in the middle of a field, always got signs of rabbits around it but never produced a bolt. however its a good set of holes to start the ferrets on and easy to keep an eye on them.

Next set didn't prove much good either, and a bugger to net up too. After picking the nets and getting stuck with thorns in the process we headed to the next set, put the light ferret in this one and got a bolt. Unfortunately the rabbit managed to slip the net, it did run off to the next set though which got our hopes up. This next set proved difficult to net too however being at the foot of a big tree on a banking with the entrance to some of the holes deep under the roots. After trying a few times to net up around the roots we decided to give the rabbits a bit of a chance and the xe chance for a slip. netted up the other holes and this time the dark ferret went down. After at least 10-15 minutes and no sign of ferret or coney the light ferret was put to ground at the other end of the set, few moments later and there was a bolt and the dog was slipped, rabbit tried to run back into the hole but stopped just with its arse end poking out, it was met by the dark ferret and xe snatched it up. First rabbit in the bag :D was also my mates first time out ferreting so was showing him the ropes, he seemed to enjoy it.

another rabbit bolted from this set but managed to evade the nets and hit cover before xe could get to it, well you can't catch them all.

On to the next set on some hard ground difficult again to net as everywhere you try to peg you're met by rocks. Once netted we let the set calm down after making a bit of noise in the snow. Ferret was entered and one rabbit bolted followed shortly by another. Two more in the bag.

Decided to call it a day at that, my mate was happy with his first rabbits, a bit of offal for the ferrets and work for the dog and I was happy too. Great to know the ferrets are working with there first time out too.
