Retrieve over obstacles?

Recommended Posts

Been doing a a bit of retrieve training with the 15wk pup. Got her retrieving a rabbit skin dummy. Thought I'd put a little obstacle in the gateway about 10inches high.

Sent her out for the dummy and she jumped the obstacle and steamed for it. Picked it up and ran straight back.

As she got a couple of feet away for the obstacle she hesitated and went off to the side like as doesn't want to jump back with the dummy.

She goes over it no problem on the way out but doesn't want to come back

Over it. any ideas?

Yes....start with something smaller than the dummy. She will be getting put of by the weight of the dummy and there a good chance with ner holding up the dummy she is not seeing the jump clearly on returning with it. Lets face it she's a very young puppy to be doing any kind of training like this. You be better of sitting in the garden playing with her than any sort of training for months yet......

i agree to a point, dont over do it and make it easy and fun, and playing is much more important to bond with the pup, but dont wait months to start training, its gonna be a working dog (hopefully) so set the seeds from early on, train but always fun and if doing anything new and it doesnt happen to work. go back to something you know she can do and reward, always end on a good note, loads of praise.

but yeah something lighter first

When she didn't retieve over the obstacle I went back to a few straight retrieves and she done them, tried again and she backed off so went back to a few straight ones.

I know she's really young but I've just been making things fun like advised. Walking, retrieving, recall etc. I forget how young she is because she's retrieving well, maybe moving on too fast.

I've got a small piece of wood she likes retrieving with a strip of rabbit skin attached with a bit of elastic. That's really light so maybe try that tomorrow?

I'm away on holiday so the mother in law is having the dogs, she will have a nice break an get pampered ready for a bit more training and ferreting when I'm back.

Really happy with her, always ending on a good note even if it's a 1m retrieve just to end it.
