BRENDAN BEHAN

Recommended Posts

Confessions of an Irish rebel, isn't as much a story as Borstal Boy, it's a bit meandering and contains some of Behans famous "exagerations".

But if you like Behan, it's a required read.

My favourite Behan story comes from AJ Cronin, so it's pretty reliable. When Behan lived in Paris he was asked by an Algerian cafe owner to write some bit of advertising on the blackbord outside the bar that would get more english and yanks to come in. Yer man hadn't a word of written english.

Behan wrote:

Come in, you anglo-saxon swine

and drink of my Algerian wine.

It'll turn your eyeballs black and blue,

And damn well good enough for you.

Taken from Wikipedia....

Behan was perhaps the most famous Irish writer of his time, and was once hired to write an advertising slogan for Guinness. As part of his payment for this, the company offered him half a dozen kegs of their stout. After a month the company asked Behan what he had come up with; Behan had already managed to drink all of the beer they had given him and produced the slogan Guinness Makes You Drunk

 True genius!

Stoaty

The AJ Cronin book is called "Dead as Doornails". It contains Cronins memoires of his time with many Irish writers, Behan especially, as for a time, they were the best of mates. The "pilgramage" to france is worth reading alone.
