Out with Martin last night at a place he has where he does the fox control to a high standard.Since taking it on 2 years ago the farmer has lost no new borns outside which is a credit to Martin and the farmer for his farming methods .We had a look with the lamp although it was a bright and still night but good job we did really as a pair of foxes had moved in to the lambing fields .lambs are well up now but not entirely out the woods as far as predation goes.Insde the first gate ,lamp on ,a squeak ad a pair of eyes to our left that disappeard straight away, only to reappear in front of us and our side of a little stream .I was on the pod by now and saw charlie running towards us up the fence line .Waited for it to stop as they do and bang ,number one in the bag at maybe 90 yds .A barren vixen thankfully so no cubs to look for .Waited a while then went over the stream to where Martin had seen another glimmer.Sure enough thee he was on some new drillings and not bothered by the lamp initially until his natural suspicion kicked in and he wandered away to be stopped by a shout from Martin .Let fly and saw him roll over to get straight up then fall again to stay still .Paced this one at 156 so a decent shot to be honest .Nothing else seen so a text to the farmer and congrats back was the perfect finish to an evening out in Somerset .

It was a pleasure to have you over as usual mate, and great to see so many Deer on our patrols.Over on the drillings Sunday to make some noise with the shotgun(and anybody that has seen me shoot since the stroke will understand what I mean when it comes to shotguns....lol).That makes me sound like some old fart now I have read it back, but I am 53 going on 17,just got a couple of blindspots that make crossing birds almost impossible to connect with, but I will have a mate over to help out.

I make no bones about hating the muppets with rifles and lamps out at night shooting foxes for no good reason especialy at this time of year so it is refreshing to read the above sentence and I'm glad there are still some people with morals who would sort out cubs rather than leave them to starve to death it's still a shame to see them shot and I'll never change my views on that but fairplay for having the cubs welfare in mind if only other shooting lads did.

there are still some shooters with morals Lev mate,we shoukldn't paint everyone with the same colours, saying that there is a growing trend to want to get out there and just kill something, and it is these people unfortunately that gives all of us a bad name.By the way the hunt doesn't come through this part of our valley probably because it is predominantly market gardens(that would be the Beaufort, and I do love to see the hunt working the rest of the valley....great to watch)
