Guest JDF
think it has something to do with english pointers being dogs for open land while the others are expected to be allround dogs hunting various tpyes of cover as well as open land.
Guest baldie
English pointers are almost exclusively used on grouse moors, either for walked up grouse, or in conjunction with a hawk/falcon, i believe. Lovely dogs, i know a vicar with one, and he,s a bugger, he,s always in the fields flushing partridge with it.
pointer28 1
I'd like to know the answer to that one too! I have a Brittany Spaniel and they are docked to less than an inch. I know they are expected to enter cover if needed to, but they never bash through cover like a springer, and I don't personally see the need for it. As for pointers. Don't get me started. Absolutely love them, I think they are a real purist form of hunting, rather than a jack of all trades like a HPR or Springer but, unfortunately I've never had any luck with them. I owned one, that I just could not train, and I mean COULD NOT train. I tried the gentle approach, I tried the severe approach, I tried the electric collar, all to no avail. I eventually gave him to a guy who lived on a mountain and has been training pointers for years. He told me that you don't really train them like a springer or a labrador, but you just have to go with them and guide them in the direction they want to go. I went to a field trial one day and was given one to hold, while the owner went to run his other dog. The dog I was holding started to do cartwheels on the lead and hit me a smack in the crown jewels and left me on my knees in the middle of a large crowd of spectators crying like a little girl.
