Interesting day while ferreting

Recommended Posts

Had the crew come down for another session today, the local keeper was keen to see us at work so tagged along for an hour first thing. It was good as we managed 13 in the first hour and he was really happy with our work. He was keen for us to get going on the rats as soon as possible, we just need a new smoker as the old one is knackered. We did a small spinney then moved to the railway side of the field where the rabbits are quite thick on the ground. It was much easier than expected even though we had the odd deep dig of 5 foot, but not much signs of young rabbits thankfully. As we were waiting for the rabbits to appear on one set I heard the sound of a hunt horn, at a distance at first but getting closer. We saw the odd hare legging it towards us and the sound of the hounds as they were on the scents, obviously they were hunting rabbits..... but the hares sometimes get in the way. As they got to where we were the pack came and had a sniff around our dogs and have a nosey what we were doing.hounds.jpg

Brilliant, I just love seeing the hounds work it made our day and they are so energetic, they run their prey into the ground and thats it all over.

Anyhow back to the ferreting, we moved to a small hedgerow just a field away just at the rear of my house (in the background), we had a last fling on there and called it a day as we are foxing tomorrow and the dogs need seeing to etc.

We were expecting a quiet day but it turned out ok really, and finished up with 45 bunnies and a hare that Danny grabbed from out of the rough, lucky sod.

Yes 2 live ones to be released on some land where mixy had destroyed the population and they are almost wiped out, new blood and all that.
