Guest oldskool
i agree that a terrier, when possible, should get the right start in its working career and after reading alot of books on entering terriers they always give the same advice which is rats and then climb the ladder to fox at a good age... well, i started a thread on the smoochers about 7 or so months ago about my 2 terrier pups self entering because they kept heading off around the farm and would always come back after a battle with what ever they went to ground on... anyway they were bought from working strains with the intent of working them but they became more family pets than anything else...i started the thread because i thought mine would be ruined too and i definatley thought they would be ruined by now because some of there battles must have been hard goin... anyway, i took one out for a dig on sunday past and discovered he went at it like an old pro... although the dig was very shallow and lasted about 40mins we got our quarry and i was well impressed with how he handled himself... .. here he is now at about 14 months now, i'm not suggesting that every tom, dick and harry should do what i do but i found that i was worried about nothin... although, a season or so will let me know what hes made of... i still have the other one to try too...
