Fat-Ferret 857
The Green partys sole MLA has launched a public consultation in preparation for his introduction of a bill aiming to ban all hunting with dogs in Northern Ireland.... My link This is one amongst a series of Proposals on the Draft NI Wildlife & Natural Environment Bill, Latest indications are that the Minister is now inclined to bow to pressure from the anti side, and is likely to: (a) place the Irish Hare on the protected at all times Schedule 5 (if enacted, this would effectively end beagling & harrier hunts) , and ban all use of snares (placing gamekeepers & other land managers under severe pressure in their attempts to manage the countryside & protect wildlife from predators). We need to act swiftly and in large numbers. You are asked to ensure that you: (i) IMMEDIATELY write to the Minister of the Environment to strongly object to any proposal to place Irish Hares on Schedule 5 of the draft Wildlife & Natural Environment Act, because we believe the existing protection under the Game Acts has seen hare numbers increase in accordance with the aims of the Species Action Plan and any further protection is unjustifiable. There is absolutely no time to lose, as the draft legislation may come back in its recommended form to the full assembly within a few days (ii) Respond to the Green Partys consultation on banning hunting please respond only to Q.1. saying No you strongly disagree with their proposal. You are asked not to attempt to respond to any of the subsequent questions. Deadline for responses 5.00pm Friday 14th May. (iii) If possible, also write to your local MLA from whichever party or parties you support, urging assistance in countering these threats (if you have already done so, following an earlier request, please accept my thanks) (iv) Hunting in NI is not an issue for Westminster, as all this legislation will go through Stormont. However, if you are visited in the next few weeks by party representatives canvassing for the Westminster elections ask if there is an MLA with them & insist to speak to that person to express your views. If not, then hassle the candidate or his agent to get them to agree to bring the issue to the attention of the MLA & say you wont vote for that party unless you get their assurances!
