patterdale acting strange

Hi All,

My 2 year old patterdale bitch suddenly attacked my lurcher the other day for no reason,she was out to do some serious damage and took me all my strength to stop the attack,since then she has been eyeing her up for another go,anyone any ideas,she is ok with other dogs in the house but as always been funny with strange dogs but these two have been together since they were pups,am thinking she may be coming into season and has singled out the lurcher bitch as a threat,strange thing is she seems particularly interested in her ear for some reason (am wondering if lurcher may have ear infection and the smell is sending some sort of signal to the pat),am clutching at straws really to explain it and the pat does seem to have a glazed evil look in her eyes,any ideas anyone

If you are keeping it as a worker buy it a kennel

If you are keeping it as a pet, get rid of it as you should have bought another breed.

thats very flippant advise to get rid of the dog just like that. try to get to the root cause have the lurchers ear examined and keep them apart till you see if the pat is in season some bitches go funny when they come on heat and will go back to normal when its over

Read my post again. I said get it a kennel if its for working.

If its a house dog there are pleanty other breeds better suited to that.

i had the same with a fox terrier and my parson bitch. one day something clicked and they were out to kill each other

to the point i had to throw them in the pond( about 2ft deep) to get them apart.after that there was no chance of having them antwhere near each other( if on the lead they would stare and when let loose even to work they would fly at each other) i had to get rid of a cracking foxl bitch and was gutted.

having spoken to very experianced dog men who told me that two alfa bitches will rather kill each other than share territory i'm sure i did the right thing.

i hope this is not the case with you mate and that it has an easier background.

The chances are they'll never be ok around each other again. I had the same with a couple of terriers I had & the only option was to rehome one of them which I did. They were kenneled seperately but it just wasn't worth the hassle. Flamin Nora - you sound like Barbara Woodhouse

Hi All,

Thanks to all those who took time to give some proper advice but as usually some people have got to have a go,the lurcher is defo not a dominant dog,and the pat has been fine with her until now,even if i got a kennel i couldnt be keeping them apart all the time as they usually work together,i was only asking for some ideas as they both been fine up to now...will keep them apart for a bit and see how things go cos i would be gutted to get rid of any of them i also have other dogs so if me pat keeps going for her i dont think i would be able to trust her,she always been totally submissive to humans but if i cant get to bottom of it then i will be very wary of her,might have to think about rehoming then....

if you want to keep them both then i would not keep them apart i woul get them back together soonest under supervision and make it clear that agression will not be tolerated by you.(i kept mine apart for a week then tried it, they would pretty much ignore each other untill an "oppotunity arose")

I have two 10 month old Patterdale females, that have started fighting some days ago. It was ca. 2 Km from my house, in the wood. I had nearly no chance to separate them from each other. It was the longest 2 Km I've ever went . If I had one one my arm, the other jumped to her and got a hold on the head (and I'm a 120Kg 190cm guy). When I arrived at home I needed a big break to recreate me .

After that they always try to kill each other. No chance that they will work together, but no problems with other dogs (till now).

Working dogs are kennel dogs .
