Well, up at the crack of 6.30 :D and the lads on there way to the first trip out of the season.

Driving out into darkest Essex, and the day dawns an absolute cracker, bright sunshine and very mild.

Seeing plenty of game on the drive out, 2 excellent looking Roe stood right out in the middle of a field with no cover for 1/4 mile in any direction  .........only 1 young dog & 1 whippet/beddy with us, so no stopping :( .........not that we would of course.

Arrive at the farm and head towards an area that the landowner had showed Dan the other night.

Mole has his little Whippet/beddy & Dan has his young Saluki/grey who is on her first trip out with the ferts.

We all had with us this years ferts, all untested............so we were a little apprehensive as to how they would work

Entered my young polecat hob Charlie, and he worked the whole day like a demon........if he carrys on like that he will defo be getting his end away next mating season.

My small albino jill allso done well.....so things are looking good.

Mole had a young ploey hob also, and he worked very well to............alas, Dans young albino jill had a bad attack of clostraphobia and just did not want to know........still theres allways next time.

The land owner came and joined us for a chat, and stayed the whole morning.

We were allso picking up a few babys, which normally I would let go, but the man wants em gone so thats it!

Final tally 19 with about 6 slipping the nets..........its good to be back :yahoo:

start to get a few

bit of a dig to 4 ft, then the fert moved on its own :tongue2:

I have been getting some tips from Fellman, so I adopt the role of foreman.

Dan a bit frustrated with his jill

Seeing a few babys :(

Tea up!

Final Tally........19......roll on next weekend :rocker:

I am a stones throw from Okendon Frank......and your right mate, its a shit house

Most of the area is going that way.........shame.

We have to travel about 50 miles out to get to the place above.

50 miles :o , thats a 100 mile round trip. :icon_eek:

Still, its worth it by the looks of it.

When i was their last, which was a few years ago, their were a lot of bunnys around the okendon country side,(if you can call it that ) seemed a good place to ferret, but i suppose every tom dick and harry do it?

Also, apparently, years back, Okendon was once a lovely place?

Yes Frank, there is a few about, but getting permission to ferret is near on impossible, the bands of Gypos ruin it for everyone.

Soon as you mention rabbiting, they think you are one of our band of country cousins ;)

Soon as farmers see your dogs, they think your gonna nick there telly

If it was nice mate, it was well before my time

Joeb looks a good day, any tips on training the dogs for ferreting?

Everybody will have there own ideas.......the dogs in these picture belong to my pals and they will mark and have been introduced to ferts from day 1.

The thing that they do which I find very annoying is stick there heads in where they are not wanted all the time........they also have a habit of putting there nose in when a bunny is about to bolt (which I think is unforgivable).....problem is, my pals dont bother to train the Sit or stay command  .

My little beddy will sit and blind stay wherever I want her to, IMHO this is very important as on bankings like this, and when alone, I would position her 1 side and I would stay the other.

Once your dog is sound with your ferts mate, just keep taking them out....but please, please.....take time to teach the SIT & STAY command.

I think its essential JMHO

Nice 1 joe, great pics. There is some cracking countryside here in essex but i know what you mean about getting perm, i lost count of how many farms i visited yesterday leaving cards, might have 1 new perm but a lot of them are keepered so got plenty of knockbacks. Worth it though if i just get 1 more :) . My little whippet x is a great marker but she has also a habit of sticking her nose in where it's not wanted..
