Not sure where to really post this topic but thought Clothing well why not after all it is clothing allbeit for a dog

I would like to share this basic knitting patern with any members whom fancy knitting a nice chunky coat for their dogs especially with this recent cold spell we have had.Its all to easy to forget our four legged companions can feel the cold as well as us and will welcome this nice warm coat just as much as their owners like to keep warm with a chunky sweater.

the patern is a basic one and can be easily adapted for larger or smaller dogs.I have lots of other patterns if anyone interested get in touch,

Pup Sweater

This pattern is sized for my dog, but Big Wool is very stretchy when knit on US 19 needles, and the shaping of this pattern is simple.

So adding a few stitches at cast on will fit a larger dog, remove a few for a smaller dog etc...

size: to fit dog with 16" collar

length of sweater: 15"

yarn: 1 ball Rowan Big Wool

OR 3 balls Loop-d-Loop Tundra

needles: US 15 and US 19

gauge: 2 sts = 1" on US 15

INSTRUCTIONS

START AT HINDQUARTERS:

- Using US 15 needles, cast on 26 sts.

- work k2, p2 rib for 4 rows

- change to US 19 needles, work stockinette for 4 rows

work increases as follows:

- Row 1: k2, k into front and back of next st, k to 4 sts from end, k into front and back of next st, k3

- Row 2: p across

- repeat above 2 rows 4 more times

- next row: k across

- next row: p across

- next row: k2, k into front and back of next st, k to 4 sts from end, k into front and back of next st, k3

- next row: p across

make armholes as follows (this is where you might want to shape the sweater to suit the location of his/her arms, and using any knit "hole" method you prefer):

- k3, bind off 6 sts, k to 10 sts from end, bind off 6 sts, k3

- p3, cast on 6 sts, p to bind off sts, cast on 6 sts, p3

decreases for neck (mark center stitch of row)

- Row 1: k2, k2tog, k to 1 st after armhole, k2tog, k to 2 sts before center stitch, k2tog, k1 (center stitch), sl 1, k1, psso, k to 1 st before armhole, sl 1, k1, psso, k to 4 sts from end, sl 1, k1, psso, k2

- Row 2: p across

- repeat above 2 rows once more.

- k across

- p across

- bind off loosely

abbreviations

k = knit

p = purl

sts = stitches

k2tog = knit 2 sts together

sl = slip

psso = pass slipped stitch over

k2, p2 rib = *k2, p2* across RS rows, and *p2, k2* across WS rows

FINISHING

Sew side seam.

If you have yarn leftover, you

can add sleeves to the armholes.

It would be nice to see some of the finished dogy coats being modelled by their dogs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
