Predator Calling

Recommended Posts

Hello I have been taking a Jack Russle predator calling. For those of you who dont know what predator calling is please bear with me and I will try to explain it...

Using hand calls or an electronic call we imitate distress sounds of prey animals - This can bring any predator in , you can never be shure what will show up.... I have taken two Mountain Lions over the call and have had several give me the slip and get away. Most of the time it is Grey Fox , Coyotes and Bobcats that come to the call.... The little Jack Russle will sometimes alert to the scent, sound or sight of these critters before I know they are in the neighborhood.I like the extra senses that come with having a dog along.

She has become very aggressive towards the Grey Fox that we have shot over her. I have only shot one Bobcat over her and that was when she was about 5 months old. Most of the time the critters are dead or dying before she get's to them. She loves to hunt and go's nut's when I get the guns out and load up the Jeep.....

I am the only hunter I know of that combines calling with the use of a dog.

I have also shot many Jack rabbits (what europeans call Hares) over her durring the summer. We only predator hunt in the winter when the fur-bearer season is open...

Most people don't believe me when I tell them that I use the "little dog" to hunt predators the usual coment is a concern for "little dogs" life and the possibility of becoming cat food. Any one that wants to see some pics of mountain cats and my Jack Russle please go to shotgunsniper.com and let me know what you think. The dogs name is Duce or little dog.....thanks SGS

nice one, i have always taken my dogs with me when stalking and on high seats( deer, pigs, fox, badger etc) and as long as well behaved they are an asset often winding quarry long before i have seen/heard them.

add to that the ease of a follow up and you have the best partner you could wish for.

if you can resist following up too soon then the dog should be ok( always a risk there but thats his job).

good luck on further outings.

merry xmas and a good new year.

Been using my Drahthaar here in Wisconsin for years. Thing he needs the most work at is the tendency to whine if the prey seems to be moving off. As with most wires, his prey drive is huge. Great at tracking and pinning wounded. Decoys 'em in closer sometimes, then again, some are wily enough to hang up once I give a command. I try to stick to whistle only as voice definately hangs 'em up more often. Locate dens in spring also. That gets a bit sportin' as they do get a bit feisty when we're close to the den with pups in it. I'm 6'2" and the yotes will barrel in at me hackles up and snarling. Exciting!

Cheers!
