danebrewer10 6
HI all, I have a question for you Steyr Mannlicher owners, specifically relating to the Pro Hunter, 1) What is the bolt shroud made from? it looks different from the action.. is it plastic or some sort of die cast aluminium alloy? 2) how do you find the stock, it looks a bit odd, especially that hollow just behind the pistol grip, and does the forend flex as it looks quite slim... 3) lastly, how do you find the safety? has nothing worn unexpectedly? as I understand the safety wheel is made from plastic... Thanks guys, I've just been looking at these for a while now and there were just a few things I wanted clearing up! Cheers DB Quote Link to post
Dan_Smiff 2
I have a Pro Hunter 2 Mountain (short and black) which I bought second hand earlier this year. It wasn’t in mint condition but it’s tidy and perfectly functional. Given the choice I would have gone for the stainless option as the bluing has rubbed a little on my barrel (saves me worrying about it’s first wear marks!). Not sure on the bolt shroud but I’ll be sure to look next time I use it. Yes the safety wheel is plastic but it doesn’t protrude much so should – the safety system and bolt in general are very good (the bolt is a much better fit than the Tikkas and Sakos I looked at before I bought mine!) Yes the fore end is flexible (a common complaint) but I shoot from sticks and can consistently do 1.5 inch groups @ 100 paces. The flexxy fore end is the only real complaint I’ve heard on them and it’s yet to affect me with mine. Quote Link to post
Dan_Smiff 2
PS. The set trigger is very good for a standard trigger too! Quote Link to post

Cheers DB I have a MK1 in .243" I've had no issues with the rifle at all other than the stocks do flex when on a bi-pod (even the MK2 will flex). 1) Do you mean the internal ring? If so, sprung steel. 2) The stocks are either something you love or loath, if your unsure than don't go for one because you'll hate the stock. I find that half of my mates love the rifle but the other half hate it and belive it or not, it always comes down to the stock. 3) Safety is great, no issues at all. Locking bolt is good. The rifles shoot <MOA right out of the box. Triggers are great. John Quote Link to post
danebrewer10 6
Hi thanks for the reply...... do you find that your trigger hand touches the safety wheel when you shoot? I ask this because I tend to grip quite far up the pistol grip squeezing the trigger more at an upward angle instead of straight back... plus from the pictures I've seen, the safety wheel progresses quite far down the top tang area of the grip.... I think the bolt has a rear shroud that rotates off to disassemble the bolt, it's right on the back of the bolt behind the bolt handle.... it just looks a different colout to the bluing/coating on the barrel and action so wonder whether it is anodised aluminium, steel, or plastic? I hope I explained it well enough! Cheers DB Edited October 8, 2009 by danebrewer10 Quote Link to post
