just a quick question

Recommended Posts

hi all,

i have just got a quick question on what gauge i should get when i get my shotgun (in abot a years time!).

i wll be 14 when i get thye shotty. i will be after rabbits, wood pigeons, squirrels any mayb even pheasent with it. i was thinking of a 20 gauge side by side. i know this must be a little bit of an old chestnut on here but should i go for over and under, side by side or maybe even a 3 shot pump gun as i was thinking of getting this in 20 gauge earlier (its a mossberg 500 pum 3 shot): http://www.saddleryandgunroom.co.uk/gunroo...-20g-wood-b.jpg

is it worth the advantages of a 3 shot gun or should i stick with getting an obver and under or side by side.

please forgve me if i'm not making mutch sence!

For your fist shotgun mate id go for a 20 bore. and the O/U S/S Pump issue, id got for a O/U or S/S, first learn shotgun safety in the field, the over and under or side by side are good guns to start with safety for obvious reasons. Have a look at my posts, iv had awesome sport with the 20bore and will never not have one in my cabinet.POST POST 2

if i wa ever to shoot pheasies or partridge it would only be a rough shoot as i would'nt do peg shooting. i thought a pump gun like a mossberg 500 would have an advantage in decoying, pest control and rough shooting but a lot of you are saying o/u or s/s. is this simply because there traditional guns or is there another reason?

i think its just personal preferance tbh, but semi-autos and pump guns are harder to strip and to clean, another thing is, are you left or right handed?

right. i have used both o/u, s/s, bolt action and pump guns bfore on a clay day where you get to tr out lots of differnet guns. i wa comfortable with all of them. is it important to strip and clan a shotgun regurarly.

yeah, if you do alot of shooting then you need to strip the gun ( if o/u or s/s then take forend of and detatch barrels from stock)

you should clean the gun before you put it back in the cabinet after shooting, when you next go clay shooting ask the person supervising/ instructing you to show you how to clean the gun when you have finished, tell them you are going to apply and want to learn how to clean your gun.

its american but i think it will be helpfull and is basically what you need to do to clean your gun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnrgRjhHawM

thank you very much borntoshoot, you've been very heplful. it is still possible to clean a pump action gun though?

it is but having not had to do one and never been shown i wouldnt know how to do it, you still have to clean them after every time you shoot it, it is more difficult than a breech loading ( o/u s/s) shotgun as you cant get a cleaning rod down the barrel without stripping the gun and taking it apart.

i just think you would be better off for a first gun with a single barrel or bouble barrel as they are easier to keep clean and should you be invited to a more formal driven shoot you then have the gun for the job, that and a over under or side by side is a general "workhorse" gun whereas a pump gun is more limited to certain exeptions.
