Advice for a new starter

Recommended Posts

Hi folk's, my name is danny downs.I have been around racing pigeons and dogs all my life and have loved every minute of it. Two years ago i got my first lurcher, she is a whippet x collie/greyhound from my brother who has been in the game for around 20 years. I have recently purchased another pup from J Hancock of Telford, he is a collie x greyhound 2nd cross and an absolute cracker. After being very succesfull with my first bitch who now catches bunnys and otherthings for fun and with the prospect of my new pup i have decided to have a go at ferreting and would like to get an overall veiw of the best practise.

I have purchased two jills bred this year and one hob at twelve mounths which has had some work.Ive got myself a little bit of permission and are looking forward to the start of my first season.

I would really appreciate any advice or knowledge that you are willing to share, thank you. DANDOW ;) .

1) What is the best locater to use?

2) What are the best nets to use?

3) What accessories do i need?

4) Whats the best time to go ferreting?

5) Should i take my lurcher?

hello mate.i have an old mk1 collar and box which does the job,but the new mk 3's are also good.

as for nets,i use either hemp nets or a heavy nylon net.you can get the thin 4 or 6 z nylon nets but they tend to tangle quite a bit and are rather fiddly on cold days

depending on the size of the warrens you are working and there where abouts it might also be advisable to think about getting a couple of long nets .

you will need a decent quality spade as digging rabbits out of setts will more than likely happen if the ferret decides to kill to ground or backs the rabits into a stop end ,also a decent flask and something to eat :D ,and possibly someone who will go with you.more for company and also if the worst should happen and you have an unforseen accident.and a mobile phone.

the best time to go ferretingis september til march or april time, but the way the seasons have been lately it might be cut short.i normally ferret til i start bolting squeakers (young rabbits ) then the ferrets are put away til the following season.

if youre lurcher is used to ferrets then definatley yes.i couldnt and wouldnt be without mine in the field.if youre dog has a good nose on it ,it will save a lot of time and hard work by marking setts for you and save you working empty warrens, and should any rabbits slip the net,the dog is at hand to mop them up.

all the best for the coming season and good luck

if you have a look on the for sale section on this site you may find some for sale.if not try e bay or one of the other lads and lasses might be able to point you in the right direction.as for how many you will need,it depends on the size of the warrens on youre permission mate.you need evey hole covering plus extra nets for every hole again.as if you get a bolt you need to get another net straight back on incase another rabbit bolts from the same hole while youre busy trying to get the rabbit out of the net that has just pursed (if that makes sence :D ).i had this happen last season, the rabbit bolted and hit the net,i grabbed it and another olted straight after.luckily i managed to grab it,my mate who i go ferreting with was in stiches at my antics, lol.as for price, everywhere is different but you will pay for what you get, some places are cheaper than others.

all the best,col
