ROB.BOB 21
first off, thanks for viewing the topic. (sorry in advance for the spelling) im in my last year at high school (6th year for those who that makes sence to) and im wanting to do dog traning as a career, prefribly gundog traning, but i SERIOUSLY need some help on finding out how to do it! how do you get into it? do , get taken on by an existing trainer as some kind of an apprentice? find some kind of collage course specificly for dog traning? or just train a dog yourself and get your name out there through blood, sweat and a hell of a lot of dogs? any one that has anything to add to this, please do, and anybody that can help would be a god sent! cheers, Rob Edited May 22, 2009 by ROB.BOB Quote Link to post

From what I understand he spends a fair bit of his duty time feeding cleaning and training his dog and an easy workload, well paid and with a fat pension after 30 years service. Not exactly what you asked about but something to think about Quote Link to post

Yes -In the police service there is a rank structure and he would have been trained by his supervisors and fellow dog handlers as to the different dog skills and handling skills required. Some are public order control( mainly Alsatians) some drugs(often spaniels trained to hunt specific drugs) and tracking dogs- sometimes bloodhounds. He has spent all of his service other than the probationary period(2 years) in the dog section. Quote Link to post
danielt 1
You do your 2 year probationary service on the beat, then you are able to specialise in specific departments, be it CID, neighbour hood patrol or armed response. The thing is with dog handlers, is its so hard to get in. for one peple who become dog handlers are thee for life, so vacancies only come up when they retire, then when vacancies do come up the application list is huge, then theres the tests-which i would imagine are pretty difficult. Thats my knowledge of the Police dog schools. No im not a copper, i just know a thing or two about it Dan Quote Link to post

rebell 0
a freind of mine does alot of dog training expect she does pet dog, agility and gundogs. all she needed to do was get insured and reconized by the kennel club so she could do the kennelclub good dog citizen scheme. after that ask around at like local parks and such to use the land for traning unless you have your own and then get your name out there. to be honest every now and then if you go into the publics eye you will most likely get more buisness. i know when i was helping a freind on the local park with their pet dog i got about 3-4 people ask me for my number and if it was a 1 on 1 job or what. hope it helped cheers chris Quote Link to post
