Individual breed traits and qualities

With regards to the breedings and litters advertised nowadays, are we in a situation where we could possibly lose the individuality of our native terrier breeds?

 

For instance, if you bred a Lakeland x Russell, different traits etc, are you after the temperament and qualities of the Lakeland or of the Russell, or are these individual traits no longer a concern within the working terrier world today?

From what I can see, I think individual breed traits are very much a concern to proper blokes that breed lines of WORKING terriers.

It would be a great shame if so called pure breeds started to die out or lose the parts of there character that made them good breeds in the 1st place.

Sadly, this is of little concern to the puppy peddler who will breed whatever he thinks is popular or has a mixed bunch of curs running around in the back yard mating as they see fit.

Anyone looking for the next SUPER cross/instant dog will only encourage these people...........JMHO

Cross breeding might be a danger but its no more dangerous than using 2nd rate stud dogs or brood bitches,the change in law is being used as an excuse to the detriment of a lot of traditionaly game breeds using it as an excuse to forward baying lakelands and patterdales .This isnt a knock at baying dogs Patts,Borders and Lakelands traditionaly gasme dogs they should be kept that way and bayers should be kept as bayers and they should be white JMO.

I'd cross a dog which had attributes I liked to another dog with similar attributes. I couldn't care less about colour or "pure" breeds, but that's just me...I'm not a breeder or allied to any certain line/type

The individuality or personality of true terrier breeds are being lost as we speak, for more are breeding for the qualities on the outside and not on the inside.

The individuality or personality of workers whether white, red, or black are pretty much the same. Workers are calm, steady, focused, committed, determined, and relentless.

What individuality were you looking for ?

totally agree with kane there, if i wanted to dig to live foxes then i'd get a russel , or kill them with a gun & save myself the effort of digging. i recently read a book book praising well bred bayers??? :11: just my personal opinion, but i want the dogs to do the work, & i'll do the digging

working terriers should always be bred for ability and nothing else. if you have two full breeds that are good workers by all means breed from but you should judge them oo what they do in the ground not on their ancestry.
