I would suggest a collie greyhound for lamping and ferreting I assume that's what you want it for
yeah it is thank you. so you think it would be best dog to have ?
-
How far you willing to travel ?
Quite a bit if its a good day or so
-
how do you no hees a boy ,ive always believed in paying my way or returning the favour ,you go shooting you pay your day ,you go coursing you pay the farmer one way or another ,thats what makes the world go round ,doesnt have to be money a bit deisel for jeep a bag of dog food ,if people are good to you and you return the favour , its always rememberd ,if i came to a mans land coursed , etc i would give him a good will gesture money fish whatever he likes ,just the way i see it
That sounds fair enough. I'm asking for some of your time to teach me what is very kind its only fair I give you something for your time.
-
get out on the fens coursing with some o the lads it will be an expierence for you ,or get out on ferreting courses run by basc if i had more time i would take you out for a day or two you would learn alot about dogs hunting in general
Yeah I would love to get out with someone who can teach me about it all it would be great

read up has much has you can then read some more get perdys progress and any other lurcher training dvds pm mr pit for theses and use youtube also and try and get out with some lads with lurchers if i was you get a pup you will bond better and you will put more effort in when things are not going eactly has you wuld like make sure what you get is of parents that do what you want and think about the kind of land it will be running and try and get something that suits theses needs and dont just rush and buy a pup from the first litter you see advertised do your home work on any litter and ask lots of questions if you can take someone experienced with you all the better good luck
i appreciate with any dog you have to put the time in i do. i just need to think long and hard on whats the best option for me and of course the dog. just trying to find out as much as i can before making my decision. its a big commitment. ideally i want to end up eventually with a good working dog. either raised from a pup or rescued it will have to be trained alot.Ferreting man, you seem to want a finished, all singing and dancing hunting dog but not willing to commit the time and energy into training one. I don't believe they are available off the shelf and ready to go.
Thank you very much some great advice. I will not rush into anything. Try to find out as much I can. Thank you again

personally I wouldn't go for it but like I said nine times out of ten its going to be nothing more than a pet lurcher what has most likey been spolit be its last owner and most likey the reason why its being rehomed from a rescue centre.
its not coming from a rescue center though if that makes any difference. the owner does work it i haven't seen it but i have heard about it from a friend. i do get what your saying its better to have a pup but are they not quite a lot of hard work and not a lot of watching ?

Plenty to choose from mate just ferreting something sharp and steady most whippet types will do but greyhound xs will and do do a good job as well what's ground like you hunt ? Flacko
its not bad. its got a bit of gourse where rabbits have been burrowing. its a u shaped valley so quite hilly
-
Best off buying a puppy in 9 times out of 10 if you get a rescuer lurcher its not going to be nothing more than a pet. And make sure you are in a position to get a dog and keep it. Too many lurchers get past from pillow to post nowdays.
yeah i need think hard about it. i have heard of a 4 year old lurcher who already works and is good for rehome. do you think that would work out in your opinon
-
I think he maybe pulling our pissers
no honestly not man. im not an expert its obvious im keen to get advice though i appreciate it all i really do. im just saying that dog i had was really hard to get to hunt and i gived up eventually. of course i didnt know enough of what i was doing. but im asking for future reference
-
Keep taking her out mate the penny will drop eventually a mate had a bitch like that she would just sit behind them without putting a strike in but she will learn, some Lurchers have a natural strike from the first time they see a rabbit some have a natural retrieving ability but there a different and sometimes it's not as easy as it should be but time an patiance is the key
thanks mate. i rehomed her. she went to a couple who where very friendly and felt like she would be more happy with them. but i hope to have another lurcher soon i aappreciateany advice you can give me.

Let her watch a dog work, it might click..
i tried that one but she was too nervous of other dogs. like i said she was pretty soft.
-
i had to rehome her because of certain circumstances. but im asking so i know in future what i should really be doing with the dog. im always grateful for tips and advice. hopefully be getting another dog soon so want to be prepared.
-
the problem i had was when she did catch up she started playing with them
-
right. how do you encourage them to catch them and bring them back. she showed no interest in actually catching them she just loved the chase
-
hello everyone i was hoping yous could help me with a question. i had this lurcher fast as out lovely dog she was from a rescue center and quite soft. i really struggled to train her for hunting she loved to chase rabbits but when she caught them up she didnt know what to do. so my question is how do you get that lurcher to kill rabbits?. i tried chucking dead rabbits for her to be curious nothing so any tips would be great thanks
-
thanks. i have had a lurcher before what i had rescued but she didnt have that kill instinct i needed. she loved to chase but didnt know what to do when she caught up with it.

Hello all I was wondering if I could get advice on what breed of dog would be suitable for a youngish man. Preferably a type what are quite easily trained and got that natural kill instinct. I would like a dog for rabbiting. Please advise thanks
-
Thanks for the welcome everybody. What I have seen so far is great.
