  1. Thank you that is really good to know I will be applying for a .243 I'm will have a couple of days with my dad it might not be for me yet... I really enjoy the fox and rabbit shooting I have shot a couple of muntjac's with the .22.250 before I had night scope on it and before I dropped down to 45grn Winchester silver tips but that was only coz I was ask to... if it is for me then I will do the dsc1

Thanks for your fast replies any good suggestions on make of 243 to go for? My .22.250 is a remmington 700 and I love it... it's a bit heavy though lol since I have put the hogue stock on it ... it's been a cracking gun

  2. Hi all I have just managed to get some land where they would like the deers managed there is a herd of 30. Now here is where my question is. I myself don't hold a dsc 1 but my dad does which he is going to come down and manage them for me. But I wouldn't mind having ago at deer stalking it never really interest me that much. that's the reason why I haven't done my dsc1 yet. If I put a variation in for a 243 will they let me shoot the deer with my dad under his dsc1. I have 22.250 for fox but I obviously I can't shoot fallow with that.plus that fact it's got a dedicated night vision scope on it doesn't help ethier lol I was going to put in for a variation anyway for another centrefire for day time use as I now have nothing to shoot foxes with in the day time I was gunna apply for ethier another .22.250 or .223 for that but if it's possible to shoot the deer with my dad I will just apply for 243 instead

I have try to get hold of my firearms officer to ask him but he is on leave at the moment and it's pointless ring the firearms office...

If someone can shed some light on it I would be much appreciated... I don't want anyone get shirty it's a genuine question

    Thanks for your time

  5. i use to think that it wasnt very humane at great lenghts on foxes but i have changed my mind on that now i use to use my 22.250 alot on foxes but im now happy to take a fox to 130yards no further with the .17hmr if i dont have the centerfire with me but i do love shooting the bunnies with the .17hmr if anyone ask me i will suggest that they buy one lol

  6. hi everyone

i was out the other night with my .17hmr i thought i would do a little write up

i come up to my first bit of land hand as i drove past i see a glint of an eye on the field first i thought it was probably a deer but i thought i had better pull in and check so i did drove down the track long side of the field had a butchers through the night vision and there was charlie my guesses over 200yards away so i started squeeking him up by hand he was a bit nervous but after few minutes he started legging it in got him to a nice place and then little squeek and he stopped and i dropped him where he stood

so i got my trumeter out (measuring wheel ) and walked over to it 101.5yards nice dog fox . i then had a quick look around with my t20 see another glint on the next field which wasnt mine to shoot so i quickly took this picture and took him back to the truck .

got back in the truck and started squeeking again 15 mins later dropped this vixen at 127 yard head shot dropped her down

i then shot few bunnys before moving off to the golf course

and shot this next dog fox at 75 yards

over all i was very chuffed with the performance of the .17hmr using hornday vmax 17grn just a shame i didnt have the 22.250 out with me but its always the way when you dont take the centerfire

    thanks for reading

    thanks

  7. i dont know how long it had been in there for it looked in good condition the cage was ruffly i would say 6ft high x 5ft long by 4ft deep i would say to behonest i thought it was against the law to do so but . thats why i thought i would ask on here

  8. hi

i went round to a fellas house the other day to pick up some ammo and in his dinning room he had a big parrot cage with a barn owl in there surely thats not right but i could be wrong .

he said he flys her on a daily basis and she goes to work with him but he said due to not having a very big garden he has to keep her in that i must admit the cage was big and his garden was tiny

just want to know if this was ok to do so as i have only ever know for them to be kept in aviarys

  9. thanks philluk i already have expanding ammo on my certificate if i was to decide to ever start stalking deer i will look in to a few courses but before i do that i will find a mentor and go on a couple of trips to see if its really for me

thanks for answering all my questions

    thanks simon

  10. philluk no it doesnt but i didnt put it down when i put in for the 22.250 as im not looking to shoot them im only after charlie with that rifle i was just getting at the fact that i know you can shoot those two species with that caliber rifle

my FA officer was saying i can and if i said i wanted to he would of put it on there possibly i dont know i didnt ask i prefer rabbit and pigeon to eat to be honest everything i shoot going in my freezer wethier it goes in stew pot , to the snakes , or to the ferret welfare society

the main thing i was asking on this thread was weather u have to have a dsc1 ? which i now know there is other courses

and my other question was if it says all legal quarry on your license does that mean deer as well ?

i like to keep on the right side of the law so i just want to get the right information

    thanks simon
