Chesapeakes are Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, dogs that originated in the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland USA. Their primary function was as a meat-market dog. In the days of punt-gunning they were required to retrieve multiple numbers of birds that were then sold to the expensive restaurants in Baltimore. The environment they worked in was tough often battling high seas, freezing temperatures and strong currents and their characteristics , to this day, very much reflect this.
