  1. Hey all,

Firstly im new to shooting, I dont have my rifle yet (paid for and awaiting license).

I was out shooting with a friend at the weekend. I was using his rifle and found the scope very difficult and annoying, i kept getting a tunnel like effect and had to constantly adjust the position of my head to get a clear view but i could not sustain it long enough to settle the cross hair onto the target.

I put this down to the scope being set up to his preference of distance from eye lense and position on rail etc. and im hopeing im right as my scope has arrived in the post this morning and at first glance im seeing the same thing. With adjustment of my head i can see a clear image.

Is this just some tweeking on postion and dials and setting it on the rifles scope rail or is this an annoying feature of lower priced scopes?

  2. Hi all,

I was out on a friends land the other week ( who is also my permission for ferreting) and he said if i had a shooting licence he would allow me to shoot the wood pigeon and rabbits too. Ive never owned a firearm of any description but have always thought about taken it up.

So i started to delve into the world of firearm licensing here in the Rep of Ireland and quickly realised that this was not going to be an easy or quick process. Just looking through the FCA1 form i can see that its accomadating to those of whom have used guns before but not so much for a newcomer. There is a section were it asks for "proof of competency- in possesion, use and carriage of firearm", how are you suppose to get knowledge in these areas if they wont grant a license to posses a firearm?

Will 1 land owners permission do?

Also, i was propossing to keep the firearm in a gun cabinet which would be bolted to a concrete floor inside a locked shed in my rear yard, would this suffice?

I was going to try get an air rifle with a long range as im self admittedly not the most stealthiest of people :) and i dont think id have much joy at getting to shotgun range.

If anyone in Ireland has any advice id really appreciate it. Sorry for all the questions but its a real mine field area when youre not familiar with it.

  4. At least the ireish have the guts to tackle the problem mainly caused by eastern eueropeans decimateing course fish stocks pity its not took seriouse enough in this country then again course fishing is primarly the past time of the ordinary working man so the authorities wont give a feck.

While it is great that eventually someone has got the finger out and decided to start taking action instead of club members and ordinary joe on the canal bank having to confront these guys ( which arent always polite and pleasant affairs for either party) i have to admit thats its not always and only the eastern europeans, we are guilty of it ourselves. Some maybe innocently like not knowing bag limits or weight restrictions but most waters i go to have clear rules posted up upon entry and yet you walk around seeing barbed hooks, 3 fish in a bag, live bait etc......if we want to protect our sport we should lead by example.

    Tight lines

  6. Hey,

Just got back from knocking a few doors and seeking permission. I knew of one piece of land that contained rabbits so i focus my search on the house nearby it.

Took all the advice ive read here on the site and dressed smartly and was very polite.

First door i knocked nearest to it had stables sheds and tractor etc so i knew these guys had land, but as i spoke to the owner he said "no we dont have any land". :hmm: ...hmmmm was this a sign of things to come. He did however give me directions to the owner of the land i had my eye on.

So i went to the house i was directed too and unfortunetly there was no one home.

I then went to the neighbour and there was a long drive way to the house and a large gate secured by a light chain, being unfamilar with farming etiquette i was unsure wether or not to enter so i decided id leave it...........not going well so far :cray: .

I didnt give up and went further up the road were this gentlemen simply said "i wouldnt have any rabbits around here on my land" i thanked him and apolagised for disturbing him. more advice from here "stay polite even after rejection".

I was gonna give in as it started to rain heavily but decided 1 more go.

This house had lots of farming equipment etc, i knocked and holy f**k, the biggest man ive seen in my life answered the door, i mean this was giant haystack on steroids :icon_eek: . I politely informed him what i was looking to do, he asked do i have dogs and i said no he said "go ahead" :toast: .....f'n delighted so i was as he showed me were he more commonly sees the rabbits. Over the moon.

New found confidence went to the nearest house this time told them what i was seeking and that i had permission from their neighbour, as im doing so a lovely young labrador comes over to me and starts to get pally with my leg :icon_redface: . Not looking so smart now covered in mud. but this land owner also said yes.

So guys im on the ladder and i cant wait to get goin.....all i need is some ferrets and eperience now. :D

Thanks for all the advice guys

  7. Thanks lads, regardless i was going to continue seeking permissions and my mate has said he'll keep an ear out for me with surrounding farmers.

Its hard when your an absolute beginner such as myself.....not even a ferret to me name :icon_redface::tongue2: .

He did say there was one farmer who disliked guns and dogs so he might ask him if he would consider ferreting but he just sounds like a grumpy aul fecker :cray: .
