  1. Hey All

I've got a two year old saluki cross grey. Normally very energetic and happy dog.

I Saturday whilst out for a walk and playing with the other pup, she pulled up and wretched a few times. Then on the rest of the walk she stayed by my side and just walked, which is very unlike here.

Come Sunday evening she had become very lethargic and was having difficulty getting up or moving. She would cry when needing to move.

I was concerned she had possible twisted her gut or maybe had something lodged in her stomach or bowel so took her straight to the out of hours vets. She hadn't been to the toilet or pee'd since the Saturday walk.

Her temp was very high at 105 degrees. Vet diagnosed her with a virus and treated her with anti-inflammatories and antibiotics and asked us to visit our normal vet the next day.

Monday we were at the vets and she was no better, infact probably a bit worse. They kept her in over night and put her on a drip. I collected her the next morning and she wasn't really any better, though she had toileted in the night.

It's now Thursday and she's just as bad. Been to the vets everyday since, yesterday they gave her a more potent antibiotic and anti-inflammatory which seemed to give her some relief but on for a short while.

She's been back in today as she's still just as bad. They have X-rayed her and given her an ultrasound which has shown nothing. Her bloods have all been fine. The vets seem to be a bit stumped and are now suggesting it could be some sort of immune disorder.

Can any one help at, has anyone experienced something similar?

So I've never really done any lamping but I'm thinking this year I'll get the bitch out a few times now I have permission nearer to home.

In terms of does and don't regards working the bitch on the lamp, I'd be appreciative of your thoughts.

    Examples:

    • When you spot a rabbit in the beam that's our of range, do you approach with the beam fixed on the rabbit or do you turn the beam off and approach then back on again?
    • Do you leave the beam on and follow the rabbit when the dogs running it?

That's the type of thing I'm wondering about.

Need a bit of advice regards parts for one of my MK3M Collars.

If you unscrew the collar and look in the bottom half of the collar you can see a silver metal conductive part that's glued in. It's used to complete the circuit when the batteries are in and the collar is screwed back together.

Some how I've managed to lose that little silver metal part.

Any ideas on what I'd need to replace it? I'm guessing I could try Maplins for some type of generic conductive metal sheeting and cut it to size myself. I was wondering though if it needs to be a specific metal or if anyone knew where I could just source a replacement part.

    Cheers

  4. Wether there are wires set or not isn't the point. It's the fact TVP and the NT believe they have the right to set wire traps with the intention of seriously injuring dogs.

As another poster on here has mentioned. It's the owners that are breaking the law.

If the original poster of this thread will let us know the exact location I will be calling 101 and the RSPCA to report it. I'll also call the local press and see what they think about TVP and the NT feeling they have the right to set wire traps with the intention being to severely injure dogs.

So I've picked myself up a pup finally. Been about 20 years since I've had an actual pup. Have been working rescues mainly. The pups a beardie x grey 8 weeks old.

Anyway, I can't really remember how to toilet train and of course there's a million different ideas on the net.

    What do you lot?

I'm looking for collie x grey type pup or something along those lines. I wouldn't minda bit of saluki in the mix, but NO bull. To be used purely on rabbits. Will be a worker but also a family dog.

Any one able to give me a nudge in the right direction?

So it looks like before long I'll be having a couple of litters. They will be my first, so I'm after so advice.

I have one large polecat hob, a polecat jill and an albino jill. At the moment they are all housed together, but I have three seperate hutches that can be used.

So, how do I go about caring for them in the right way? For start to finish.

Would it not of been a better idea looking into it all first before breeding them ?

I've done a ton of reading, and there are so many conflicting opinions. I just want some unbiased advice from people that actually do it, rather than people that just write about it

  9. I agree with cider man there ,18 months 20 runs my pups had 20 runs in the past fortnight she's only 10 months . No disrespect but you should no put and givin the fogged work atb Jim

This is the bitches first season and mine for about 10 years. It just worked out that when last season started she was far too immature to get out, even now she's still a bit puppyish. Not only that but she was a rescue so I had other issues to deal with first. It needed to be done slowly. She's come along fantastically, and I'm sure she'll come good in the end. But I'm always interested in hearing other peoples views.

I'm going to give her a go on the flirt pole, and just keep up what we've been doing so far.

    Cheers

So have been out a fair bit with my 18 month saluki x whippet ferreting. She's had a good few runs on rabbits now, upwards of 20. However, though she's managed to catch most of them, she doesn't really strike properly. She'll grab and let go, chase it down again, put her paw on it, and then once it stops moving she just lets it up again etc etc

Anyone any ideas how I can get her more focused and doing the job properly? I'm starting to wonder if she'll get there.

  11. Hey all,

So I'm still having issues with my saluki/grey/collie.

No problems catching the rabbits, but when she does she just plays with it instead of getting a good grip on it. She'll let it get up and run again, or if it plays dead she just loses interest.

Done a load of work with a dummy wrapped in fresh skin, she's perfect with that, including retrieval.

    Any advice much appreciated

  12. Hey all,

So I have a Saluki/Whippet/Collie bitch, 15 months old and getting into her first season.

My intention is for her to be a purely rabbiting dog. She's been out on three ferreting trips now, and is getting on very well in every aspect except one.

When she runs a rabbit, she'll have no problem catching it up and getting hold. However, once she has a hold and the rabbit stops struggling she lets go so she can run it again. Also, her first strike doesn't seem to be as aggressive/focused as it should be.

Any ideas on how to correct this?
