I have been advised that I should not give my Chooks anything Dairy?! BUT, I have been given so much advice by different people, I think that I'll just do what I think works - trial and error.
Some people say cook veg scraps, others say give them raw. Some say give oyster shell, but I bake my shells from used eggs, then crush them into a fine powder to add to their food as a grit.
Some people say not to use straw, some say it's the best bedding.
IT'S ALL TRIAL AND ERROR!
I am lucky that I have a very clever partner, son and his friend, who have all made me a very large coop and converted half of the shed into an adjoining henhouse with nesting box etc. I have not used Diatom, as it is quite cold now, so would imagine that the redmite will have died off for the winter. I will treat in the spring.
If anybody wants some further advice, I suggest that you go to the "Down the Lane" forum on Facebook, as there are loads of people who have vast experiance of chook keeping etc and are a very friendly bunch - no question is a silly question!
Good luck!

Arseholes - glad that you enjoyed taking the pi*s out of me! I am new to this site and thought that it was worth a try asking! Doesn't it after all say "Wanted" as the section title? anyway, I was told by some other members that this was a friendly site and people would help others - obviously not!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, I am in Somerset and would like to keep Chickens. I was looking after some for "so called friends" who moved away, but they got nasty about it saying that I hadn't been giving them enough eggs (I got 1 laid a day!!!!!).
So, I decided to start off and get my own hens and house and coop, also a nesting box. If anybody in Somerset has any of the above to offer, then I would really appreciate it! Am able to collect at weekends. Obviously, I need the house, coop and box first, but would also like to know of anybody that is either selling or "giving away" hens or equipment I would be very grateful.
Also any advice would be great - I have learnt alot and have plenty of friends who can advise, but anything helpful is good!
Chicken wire is also required desperatly!!!!!!
Thanks for reading, please take pity on me!!!!!!

If you want ex-batties, there is a group of people that do regular rescues. I can't remember their name, but if you go onto the "down the lane" forum on Facebook, they are affliliated with them, you will also find loads of help and advice from them. The group that do the batty rescue organise "drop off points" all around the country, so you should be able to find one close to you. I think that they just ask for a "donation" for each bird, which is fair enough as they have to cover their fuel expenses etc.
Good luck - but do you know how much care you are going to have to put into an ex-batty? They take lots of TLC, but are well worth the extra work in the end and think about it - you are saving them from a life of hell!
