  1. With our new site at Borris House in Borris, Co. Carlow being much bigger, we have already significantly increased the show this year in terms of associations, attractions, have-a-go activities and traders. Set-up is under way and it is shaping up to be a great event. Keep posted on our website and facebook pages for regular updates: www.nationalcountryfair.ie and http://www.(!64.56:886/nationalcountryfair

  2. Thanks to the couple who have pm'd so far. I will be in touch and i do hope that we hear from the rest as they certainly have made plenty of defamtory comments that i hope can be discussed face-to-face but we'll see. As i have said I am happy to listen to your views on how things can be improved but I don't feel that you all have a concensus between yourselves as to what really constitutes the type of event you are looking for. I am seeing a common concensus with the price but as to the rest well maybe through discussions with some of you we will see a trend appear. Now if the issues are genuine then I should be seeing more pm's.

  3. come to the show in westmeath next week derek,my name is there in front of you.i say most of the people you want will be there.look forward to hear from you.

michael i would like to have got to kevin em show but unforunately the pheasants for our shoot are arriving this weekend and this will rule out me being able to get to his show. what others are coming up that you think a lot of these lads and ladies will be attending?

  4. Having just returned late last night from Ballinlough Castle, I am now just reading the feedback regarding the show. I have to say that I am somewhat surprised by the negativity in these comments since neither me personally, nor my co-director, were made aware of any of your issues on the day; in fact the feedback I received from your fellow competitors while over in the Lurcher & Terrier area was very positive. However, we thank you for pointing out your concerns and you can be assured that we will listen to what you have to say.

I would now personally like to invite the following people from the forum who raised concerns to meet with us, at a venue convenient to you anywhere in Ireland, to discuss how you feel we can improve this event for the future. We are not asking for your name but would ask that you private message us with a contact number so that we can set up a meeting with you:

Unlike the show in Moira, the Ballinlough Castle Country Fair is a young event, only in its third year. We do however strive to have the same standard of lurcher & terrier event at both shows. I consciously moved the L&T events to directly beside the main entrance point this year so that everyone attending the show was walking in right beside the L&T arena. I am well aware that you all like to park ringside and this is the closest point to the centre of the fair that allows ringside parking and is also suitable to race dogs and have your show rings.

With regards to judging, I personally was in the main arena when the All Ireland Champion Lurcher, Terrier and Whippet were being picked and I can assure you that from my experience of working lurchers and terriers over the years, I would have had a very tough decision and would have quite willingly taken any of those dogs home with me, including the whippets. Judging is down to personal choice of that particular judge on that particular day. I are already looking at a number of ideas to ensure that judges are not the same at all events. With this in mind, rather than come on and criticise judges, I am more than willing to accept suggestions from you for judges at future events but they must have experience working the particular dogs they would intend to judge.

In relation to there being less at the show, well this year in addition to the usual produce, crafts, shooting & fishing stands (including 10 from overseas) and the usual gundogs, clay pigeon shooting and main arena acts (3 of which were brought in from overseas), new this year to the Ballinlough Fair was the Hunt Chase, Dog Agility, Pet Show, Ferret Racing & Showing, Gundog Snooker and the Poultry Show & Sale.

I am sure we can all agree that prices are up everywhere and this is no different for traders. They have to incur significant fuel costs to bring stock the length and breadth of the country to shows like ours but there were bargains to be had and I heard of plenty. They simply cannot keep costs at what they were 5 or 10 years ago. However if game fairs and shows like ours are to survive then this is a price we all may have to pay.

I look forward to your pms.

  5. its not that £15 euro would break the bank but its the principle, its a rip off, drove to this show myself last year enjoyed the day but the extra fiver is a rip off and on that principle I wont be going chatted to a right few of my mates and they said the same.

What extra fiver? This show was €15 last year and this year we have a lot more new attractions in addition to what was there last year. Therefore we are bringing even more value for money. For families we have children going FREE. There are also a number of children and animal charities being supported? Either we care enough about country sports to put a little bit of revenue their way or we don't. I know which boat we are on!

  6. 15 to much mate wont see ya there.

Michael that is your choice. We believe that €15 is value for money considering all the competitions, demonstrations, attractions and stands that will be at the show. Our price is also in line with most other large events with one exception, we do not charge for children as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

  7. With just two weeks to go now until the Ballinlough Castle Country Fair, we are all hoping for great weather and another great show. We have been working hard over the last year to bring further new attractions to the show and trust that you will enjoy and participate in as many aspects of this growing two day event as possible. Although only coming in to its third year, this show is already generating significant interest from all across Ireland and this can be seen in the new additions to the show this year. But first to some old favourites.

    LURCHERS, TERRIERS & WHIPPETS

Sunday 17th July promises to bring yet another great Lurcher, Terrier & Whippet event to the Ballinlough Fair. Our team has brought together some great classes for you to enter and in addition to the excellent prize structure you have come to expect from our shows, the winners will also qualify for the Champion of Champions Show at the Midland Game Fair in Shropshire in September.

Entries can be had on the day and remember that car parking is ringside for this event at Ballinlough Castle.

The three Best in Show dogs and the three reserve Best in Show dogs in the terrier, lurcher and whippet sections will be invited to take part in the All-Ireland Working Dog Final at Ballinlough Castle where they will be judged against the top qualifying dogs from the National Countrysports Fair held earlier this year.

    CLAY PIGEON SHOOTING

This year we have decided to offer a different challenge in the form of Compact Sporting. This discipline is shot from a number of different stands, each giving a variation of targets. With both classified and unclassified sections to choose from as well as a ladies section and excellent prize funds, this is sure to bring out the competitive spirit in any clay pigeon shooter. There will also be a pool trap running with 1/3 of the entry being returned in prize money. The clay pigeon shooting will be running on both days of the fair.

  11. We want to thank the Gilford Lurcher & Terrier Club for running another top class event at the Moira Game Fair this year. A special thank you also goes to all the competitors and to the judges who we recognise do not have the easiest of jobs on the day. Finally congratulations to the winners in each of the categories.

  12. moira , what day is the terriers ,and are we quarantined in the bog at the front of the show again ,atb cg

    CG

The terriers events are on the Saturday 28th at Moira and no one is quarantined in a bog at the front of the show. All those entering the lurcher, terrier and whippet events, like everyone else, are entitled to pay the adult entry fee if they want to see round the rest of the show but if they do not wish to they can still enter the showing and racing activities separately. We the event organisers meet with the organising club well in advance of the shows each year and agree where the showing and racing will take place and in what format. The ground conditions are not moss and peat so therefore not bog and as someone who has lived and worked both terriers and lurchers for many years on bog ground, I can assure you there is quite a difference. The weather we cannot change, so it really comes down to whether the going is soft, good or firm on the day and the conditions will be the same for all dogs entered at the Lurcher, Terrier and Whippet events.

fair enough,, think you know where im coming though ,hardly the bowling green up above where the hooray henrys saunter about in their unstained barbours ,just feel the lurcher and terrier men are always corralled away out of sight from the main events, ps same in shanes !!!!

    Cheesegrater,

Absolute nonsense about Shanes Castle - you may have a legitimate point about Moira but not Shanes Castle. At Shanes the Terrier & Lurchers are NOT hidden away but very much part of the show and within the main fair area in the same field as the bar & catering; the Fisherman's Row ; The Casting Competitions; the pedigree dog show; the dog agility show and the horse and carriage ring. Their position at Shanes Castle is dictated by the area needed for the superb racing course which is like a bowling green!

I understand that Lisburn Council ( Moira's backers) expressed concern about Lurchers at the fair and I assume the Moira organisers have reacted to this by putting them outside the main fair.

There is also a REAL difference in how they are promoted - how many terrier & lurchers have you seen at a NCF press reception? And of course a HUGE difference in prize funds.

I would ask you to name one Game or Country Fair in the whole of the Uk where terrier & lurcher owners are treated better than at Shanes Castle.

    Albert

We speak for the Moira Game Fair and how we run it! If the organising club is happy with where their Lurcher & Terrier event is situated within the fair site, then that is good enough for us! Let us also provide a little clarity; our fair continues to have the full support of Lisburn Council; and yes that is ALL aspects of the fair.

Thanks for addressing me by name - pity I don't know yours! I thought the name of the fair was the National Countrysports Fair not an apparent variant of our brand name and registered trademark of Irish Game Fair. Perhaps relations between us and the fairs would be better if you stuck to promoting your own brand instead of apparently trying to tap into the success of ours. As you are aware because of the incident with Matt Lee I could never co-operate fully with you but at least if you stuck to promoting your own brand we could be 'good neighbours'.

I had heard that the terriers and lurchers had been moved to outside the main fair because of concerns expressed by the Council and/or individual councillors. When I saw your post about it being part of an overall plan, I decided to try to check the authenticty of my original source and googled 'Lisburn Council and Lurchers' and found the following in Council Minutes of the 4 November 2009: ' Mr Beckett and Mr Lutton undertook to give consideration to further comments by Councillor J Tinsley concerning the presence of lurcher dogs and their owners at the Countrysports Fair.'

I wonder was this 'consideration' part of the 'planned' move of terriers and lurchers outside the main fair? But perhaps my orginal information was incorrect and I have misread the content of the minutes - perhaps Councillor Tilsley was suggesting that you bring more Terrier & Lurcher owners in to the Fair.

I genuinely wish Derek well in putting together the fair under difficult conditions - as a veteran of all kinds of weather I understand the difficulties involved in building a fair up from the grass up in inclement conditions - as someone who always puts 100% in myself I always admire a grafter! But why are you not on site helping?

    Albertj

    Albertj

We said when we came onto this forum that we were doing so to promote countrysports and do so under our own brand but I think it is time to put a few facts straight:

    1) In case anyone is unsure, our name has been the same now for 15 years - National Countrysports Fair.

    2) As we are based in Ireland and we run a game fair, in the eyes of most countrysports people we are an Irish Game Fair. As for trading off I am confused as to what we are supposed to be trading off as. Obviously not the Northern Ireland Game Fair - it was sold. Perhaps its the Irish Game Fair and Country Lifestyle Festival - erm NO. Or is it the Great Game Fairs of Ireland - not that one! Oh it must be the Irish Game Fair - well this is a generic description but not our name. In fact the more I think about it...if you don't know the name of your own show, how could be we copy branding it?

    3) As for an 'incident with Matt Lee' - I don't know a Matt Lee but please enlighten us about who he is and what this incident is!

And when it comes to reading information on the internet, I, not that long ago, was reading a very interesting article myself from a Scottish based university.

There are a number of satellite events that need a significant amount of space in which to operate. These include Lurchers & Terriers, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Gundogs etc. As far as our Lurcher & Terrier events go, they are only 70 metres from the centre of the fair site. We in no way are trying to corral anyone away out of site but by the same token everything cannot run in the main arena. If you look through our main fair site on any of the days that lurcher & terrier events are running you will see many owners and their dogs right there in the middle of all the activities and this is how we feel it should be. You will also see on our galleries that the winners of the lurcher and terrier events are taken into the main arena for presentations, not an act of something we would be trying to hide. I personally have never worked any of my dogs on bowling greens and certainly wouldn't advocate we introduce this at the fair. I would rather they race on as close to the natural terrain as they are used to and we feel in doing this that we are also giving the competitors the flexibility to choose whether they want to come into the main fair site or simply race and show their dogs in the lurcher & terrier area.

  16. Just checking what time do the events kick off at :hmm: ? And is there a list of the show classes? Also do the whippets have their own judge or will they be judged by the lurcher judge? ...........QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS...lol!!!!

No problem! The racing kicks off at 11am so we are recommending competitors be there for 10.30am latest. If you click on the link below this will show you the various racing and showing classes on the day. With regards to the judging; we do not ask the organising club to provide us with this information. They manage this themselves and unless we had issues we leave them to do what they do best.

  17. A well run show racing and shoeing done very quickly and a chance to get around the show Who is judging the lurchers

Thanks for the comments Pigsy! We leave all this down to the organising club as it is their annual show. Having worked with them for many years, we are happy that they run an excellent event. They decide who to invite along as judges on the day and we do not question this or ask them to disclose who the judges are.
