  1. Bad idea feeding before hard work in my opinion. Just feed the normal feed the night before and as long as your dogs fit, you will have no bother at all.

I totally agree, i think the key is having your dogs fit before your first shoot day, i feed the night before as usual and nothing while hunting, if you are working them twice a week they should be fine, any more or they are looseing condition put them on 2 feeds a day on non hunting days.

Mine hunt all year round so fittness has never been a problem.

    Dave.

I agree, fitness is the issue here, no dog needs a breakfast to put in a hard days work. My spaniel would have come out lamping after beating aswell if he had his own way!

From the 12 august my dogs could be doing six day weeks, but I feed fatty meat + bone etc sometimes some high protien biscuit and kitchen leftovers like cooked veg etc. never had any bother with gundogs appetites unlike a lot of lurchers so I just make sure they get a bigger meal to keep them in good nick. They may have lost a bit of weight by October but feck they will be fit and solid and raring to go on the phessies.

Yep, if dog fit then should be no problemo, i also add a Vitamin B complex tab the night before, prior to feeding the main meal, helps release more energy from the food (as if they need it) lol, and if the dog is having a hard hard days work, then a vit B12 at lunchtime gives them a kick. I have one springer that i shoot with and it all hard going during tha day and loads of water retrieves, so he does get a right hammering, but like been said, if dog is fit then shouldn't have a problem, i just see the vitamins as an additional supplement to the diet when working dead hard for hours at a time daily & weekly.

  2. Not to me its not mate would rather have my dogs, would you sel your kids for a million.

    In an instant!!

You can have the kids & mrs free of charge!!, mind you kids kidneys fetch a good price these days, so i could put underfloor heating in the kennels.

Kids want money money money and give you feck all, a dog loves you for what you are, even if your a chubber

  3. In my opinion and it's only an opinion these type of dogs have hunting in there blood and it is wrong to get a dog like this if you are not going to let it hunt.I think this is the cause of many problems people have when they get a breed of dog that they know nothing about. These dogs have huge prey drive which is why hunting people use them.To get a dog like this with no intention of letting it hunt is ,in my opinion looking for trouble.ATB, woodbine

    Well said

  4. Ive got a beddy/whip x collie/whip/grey and she does very well indeed, for me anyway, and works well with the spaniel in the cover flushing for her, good in the day aswell but gets abit bored if there's no constant action, but miles better on the lamp.

You don't come across these crosses very often, but crackers if you get a pup from working parents, especially 2nd cross on the sire/dam side ive found. I waited ages for one.

The beddy just gives her a bit of fire, and as been said, the collie gives a touch of brain.

Good cross i've found anyway

  5. cheers guys for all your help, will try out all your tips. will the pitch of the whistle make much difference if she has been trained to a certain one? can you reccomend any good books? and doers anyone know of any good trainers in the yorkshire area that you would reccomend?

Mate, i would advise to read anything by Joe Irving, especially Gundogs Their Learning Chain, very good book. Most people use a 210.5 whistle it would seem. That's what i use on my ESS.

I think you would need to try the basic whistle commands on her first and see how you get on, at least then you would have an idea of what she does & doesn't respond to before you lay out some cash on training etc.. It will just reduce down what you need training wise if any.

Are you just wanting her to pick up/retrieve or do you want to shoot over her etc?? In any case mate, sounds like you have a cracker of a dog already there, and one that wants to please you. Like i said, when a dog starts looking at you for commands, then that's the icing on the cake and proves that she's now tuned to you, so get out and enjoy it fella

  6. can you track anyone who shot/picked up with the previous owner? just in case they may know the vocab used??

if she's already trained she will soon learn your own command's.

the bloke would've used words like 'get on','lost' or 'hi lost' to send her out.while out i would expect he used one pip of the whistle for sit and a hand signal for sit.from there you can use directional signals to direct the dog.to get the dog to come back he would've used 3/4 short quick pips.to send her back he would of held his hand up in the sit command and then push it out in front of him and used a command like 'go back'

Good advice there, she's probably on standard signals, it's good that the dog is looking to you for a command, as that's one of the hardest things to achieve.

So likes been said, single pip for hup, or change of direction with hand signals, 2 short pips for recall,4 in quick succession for straight back in, one longer pip for stop, thats what i use on my springer anyways and he does what i want him to. Voice can be "get on - Go back" or where game is, then "Aloss"

Just give everything a try mate and you will find what works or what's close enough and then work on that with her. It does sound like you have a gem of a dog there mate, so best of luck to you and happy hunting

  7. Mine are on raw, but i do switch them occasionaly for a week at a time and the best one ive found is Chudleys Working Crunch. My dogs look good on it, icluding my spaniel, and ive noticed no difference in energy levels either.

At £13 a bag, you can't go wrong. I fed Redmills once and they all went loopy and had the crumbliest shits ever.

    Working crunch for me.

  8. few pics of my dogs, two labs and three cockers also I own a Lurcher.
