  1. there is a link on this site to permission forms by grimreaper. im sure if you asked him he would point you in the right direction no problem and the look professional too. hope this helps mate

    atb liam

I've had a gander at Grims letter, looks pretty good, it has given me some good pointers to pen my own letter

  2. also plod, think outside the box :hmm:

why just settle for farmers/landowners, try large garden centres/nursaries, they can get plagued by squirrels, churches/graveyards can be affected by rabbits, large schools/colleges with playingfields, again rabbits, make sure you have insurance from one of the clubs, then drive around keeping your eyes open, it can be easier on your confidence talking to a groundsman rather than an owner

one of my first permissions was our local college, and a football club/pitches

had only read the first page before replying, so had'ent seen members had said this already

No problem there mate ;) . It just help confirm I am on the right track

  3. hi buddy

    a must is insurance!

have you sent any lettrs out? also its just not farmers.

    try these places

    horse paddocks,

    hotels,

    football grounds,

    rugby grounds,

    industrial estates,

    business parks,

    golf courses,

    cemeteries,

    manor houses,

    country clubs,

    riding shcools,

    ect..ect.........

get some of grim reapers letters of permission

    here: http://www.thehuntin...showtopic=40744

and edit to suit then post to all above in your area, and bingo! i have had good results with them.

if all else fails then check out the shared permission on here.if that still fails, then get knocking on doors

    hope this helps!

    regards

    davy

Thanks a lot Davy, I had thought of land other than farm land but you have added a whole new bunch of ideas, fantastic mate :notworthy: and I sure your advice will help ;) , I have already penned a letter of permission and I will look at grim reapers letter and compare it to mine, I am sure being new to seeking permission there will be some good stuff in what he has written  .

I may edit his for my use or do a combination of his and mine :hmm: , cheers mate

  4. Gaining permission is all about technique, confidence and rapport building.

If you know of footpaths going through land, then walk them, look for signs of damage from rabbits or for pigeons dropping on to crops. Then, making sure that you are dressed appropriately (Smart casual), knock on the door of the landowner, introduce yourself politely, show him your understanding of vermin control by mentioning what you've observed and where, then ask in a non aggressive manner if you could try and bash them one morning/afternoon. Only ask for the one time, don't push it at this stage, you may be as trust worthy as the hills, but they don't know that and one afternoon sounds an awful lot less to agree to than total permission.

If the landowner agrees, then bring him in by asking if, for example there is a certain thing he wants rid of, ie pigeons or rabbits and what area to stick to. this shows responsibility and consideration in your thinking.

On the agreed day, be sure to drop him a reminder that you will be there. When you are there, try and bag as many of whatever it is you said you would try to. I find pigeons the easiest to begin with, as at this point, it's a bit of a numbers game.

The final bit is the offer and to gain more days. Call in to thank the landowner and offer them some of the bag. They'll probably say no, but that's not the point, the point is to tell them what a great afternoon you've had and to show them your success. If it's a bit thin then obviously don't show it all but have a brace of pigeon ready to present for looks sake.

Present them with a decent bottle if wine £7+ (it shows thought)and thank them again. Ask them if you could pop back the next week to try again. a simple yes and BINGO, job done!

Failing that, marry a farmer's daughter, both ways have worked for me!!

That all sounds pukker to me, I great sounding approuch :) , I am taking it all on board and appreciate the advice I am getting from you chaps

  5. Was in the same boat this time last year started out with ferrets and shooting after 20 years away from it

spent about a month just driving around farms first couple of weeks not a sausage then got permission on one farm now have the adjoining three .

don't give up you will get some in the end

I would be interested to hear your technique when knocking on doors :hmm: it seems a delicate subject to approach when asking a stranger if they would allow you to go on their land with an air rifle :icon_eek:

Well it may be a bit of putting at first but stick at it

when you go try to turn up reasonably smart .be polite and if you get knocked back say thanks and leave your name and number in case things change in future.

always tell people your looking for somewhere to shoot i have just sorted some permission on a large riding school by word of mouth.sort your self insurance before you start it helps when asking people

    all the best with it

Cheers for the advice! I am looking at what all the chaps who already have permission are saying :hmm: , smash it all together and then get cracking :)

  6. TBH mate, if thats the name you want then keep it....who gives a sh*t!

I for one don't have a problem with police being on the site as I have nothing to hide. At the end of the day in my eyes those that give the grief should expect grief back!

As for knocking mate, just keep at it..... I lost all my permissions to paying syndicates who pay £200 a year for 5 shoots, something I can't justify so I gave up hunting sold all my gear and took up photography. It wasn't until my cuz (Festa)met with Zini and I was invited to shoot on his permission that I went and bought another rifle.

I then set about visiting all sorts of places and now have enough land to keep us going....

So....keep at it mate...it will come!!

    Darryl

Cheers Darryl, make you right mate

  7. You could knock some flyers up Plod! fill in all the relevent details on how responsible you are and obviously you only want to shoot Vermin and get them sent out to the Landowners, there's been a good few flyers printed up on this site in the past if you can find them, also joining the BASC might help to show you have some cover...

I'm a bit lucky as in the past I would contact a landowner asking to fly birds at Rooks/Crows/Pigeons/Rabbits and general Vermin, I would normaly get a favourible response expecially if they come out to see the bird fly the quarry mentioned above, after a while when I have won their trust I'll then ask if there is any chance of bringing a gun on the land!! 99% of the time this way has been succesfull......

    Jasp

Cheers for that Jasper, sounds like a good idea mate

  8. I tihnk you should change it, then stop asking what everyone else thinks, lol. i bet you do your wifes head in.... be assertive pal... imagine if you asked your mate, "should i shot it or what, what do you think" be brave pal, just do it...

    Point taken :D

  9. mmmmmm, very strange name to pick on a hunting site. especially with us being watched by the anti's, filth, and rspca etc.... i think commonsense would prevail here, that knocking is the only way to get permission....knocking for a month is nothing... You should be knocking all your life....

Yes I agree about the name, I have had nothing to do with hunting for some 35 years and this was the first forum I joined, I went for the user name just because it was the first thing that came to mind and I was eager to join having just got my new rifle and didn't give it enough thought :icon_redface:. I don't know if I can/should change it or leave it in the hope that people will get to know that I am not a copper. What do you lads on this forum think? :hmm:

  11. Pc Plod are you a real police man by the way?Would have thought farmers would trust a policeman and let you on no problem, you would have an advantage over the rest of us hunters, not having a knock at you or anything, but my advice is you have to knock on doors like the rest of us and gain the trust of the landowner/farmer as there is no other way, except perhaps by way of friends recommedations and invites until you are trusted, then word of mouth will do the rest, good luck finding permission anyway

    Higgins

No I'm not a real copper! I just picked that user name because my initials are PC and at school(many years ago) the kids called pc plod for a bit of fun. I'm afraid I have no advantage over you chaps!, shame that!, maybe I should join up just to get hunting permission

  12. get knocking mate and be sure to point out all the damage the rabbits are doing etc a bit like "hi my name is pcplod i am wondering if anybody does any vermin control on your land just as i see there is a lot of your crops being eaten by rabbits and was wondering if i could get rid for you " then he may say no do 1 you little scroat before i shoot you lol or yeah no prob whats your number etc and give me a ring when you are comming down etc

i find it a lot easier to get permission when you have permission as you can name other places you shoot etc

Thanks for the advice, even down to what to say, what more could I ask for mate

Hope I don't get the "you little scroat" treatment :11:, mind you better than being shot at :hunter:

  13. I just go and knock on doors and ask if i can have permission to shoot and ferret on there land. and thats how i get my permission but i dont no how other people get theres mate good luck in finding some

Cheers for the response y444tes  I would be interested in how lucky you are getting permission by cold knocking :)

I would have thought that you get a lot of turn aways?

  14. Well I'm not sure what to expect in the way of help, but here we go :) .

I have come back to air guns after a 35 year break and things have changed  back then I used to find the odd farmer who would let me hunt a few Rats, Woodies and Bunnies, where are they now I wonder :hmm: .

How the hell do you lads find somewhere to hunt these days, please, please help put me on the road to finding permission if you can, you know, the how, where who or what I need to find somewhere  .

If someone can give me an idea of how to go about finding permission to hunt, then please do so, my gun is collecting dust

I look forward to your response on this one

  15. As explained in an earlier topic I have come back to airgunning after a 35ish year break (I'm a bit of a Dinosaur), so please excuse my ignorance :icon_redface: . I have been wondering what advantage/difference the shorter Carbine rifle has compared to a standard air rifle? :hmm: , and the biggy......which is best for hunting, or are there pros and cons with both, I suspect the standard air rifle is the hunting machine but maybe I am just stuck in my ways  .

By the way, hail to you for your advice on the best hunting springer :notworthy: , I am enjoying reading and researching

  16. Hi everyone,

Hope you are all enjoying your Christmas break, and are not to sober :drink: but sober enough to let me pick the brains of the more expert among you :gunsmilie: . I am looking to buy a springer during the next couple of months, it will need to be a full powered Rabbit/Pheasant stopper capable of stopping fur and feather at range :hmm: . Hit me with your opinions please but nothing that is going to need a fat bank balance to purchase, I look forward to what advice you Rabbit wackers have to offer ;)

  17. Hello, PCplod!

Yeah, it can be a funny place this forum but most of the lads and lass's that contribute on here these days are good folks.

TR Robb does a fair bit of stuff for the SMK's, he's an odd bloke to deal with but his stuff seems to work well. I've not had any dealings with his SMK gear but have had a few bits and bobs for Crosman's before that have been good.

I use a King Ratty a bit and has been said, Co2 does lose power when it gets properly cold, so don't get too dishearted. For what it's worth, the best pellets I've found for the Ratty are H and N FTT's. Well made and hit hard.

Good luck, mate, with all that you need luck for....

    Cheers.

    Hi Andy,

Cheers for the words of encouragement mate ;) .

I used Bisley super field which were a bit unpredictable, with the gun supported every now and again a pellet would screw wildly off to one side :wallbash: , the pellets that didn't do this were bang on target. I thought maybe it was my shooting :icon_redface: , but the gun was supported and the cross hair was steady and I must have put about 50 pellets into the target to test my shooting in case it was down to me. My brother (a keen airgunner :gunsmilie: ), said it was down to the pellets, but I am told that Bisley super field are high a standard pellet, I will look at the H and N FTT's and maybe do some more online research :hmm: .

  18. again thats all dependant on alot of different conditions but it should! be about 10-10.5 at the least but there are tuning guides on the web on how to fine tune them as they are a bit rough out of the box, if you look up charlie da tuner on google same spelling you should find his how-to i followed it with my 78 but i over polished some of the parts and had massive c02 loss form shot to shot so be careful  and phantom i can only speak for the xs19 in .177 as thats the only one ive used and seen in action :tongue2:

I am sure that my 79 is not spitting 10-10.5 because I don't think my old Meteor spat more than about 9ft/lb and it would have knocked the spots off of this xs79, thanks for the advice Wuzzy, I will check out charlie da tuner, cheers mate

  19. its the temprature fella the co2 compresses with the cold but expands with heat so in winter its the worst rifle you could use no amount of tuning would make it usable in the cold i,m afarid, you might be better off looking at a cheap springer for winter shooting a smk xs19 in .177 ia an awsome rifle for the money and with a decent scope will do the bizz :clapper:

And just what is wrong with the XS19 in .22?

Aint sod all wrong with it in .22 I highly recomend it in .22 but then I may be a little biased seeing as mine is a .22 cal bunny killing machine (and the odd mouse chucked in for good measure) :tongue2:

PCPlod, when Joey (Wuzzy) said about not taking Davy's advice he wasn't talking to you buddy, he was talking to a particular troll  that Davy told to take a long walk off a short pier (in a round about way, that we'll not go into again).

    Phantom

    Hi Phantom,

Thanks for clearing that up for me, I really must get the hang of this! . I am reading what you and Wuzzy are saying and taking it all in, I have a feeling that I may live to regret buying the xs79 but we shall have to wait and see, at the moment because of a fight with the dreaded big C I can't throw any more money at the sport :( , I will have to bide my time, but this will give me a lot of time to research and narrow things down, you chaps out there are good source of imformation, very helpful

  20. its the temprature fella the co2 compresses with the cold but expands with heat so in winter its the worst rifle you could use no amount of tuning would make it usable in the cold i,m afarid, you might be better off looking at a cheap springer for winter shooting a smk xs19 in .177 ia an awsome rifle for the money and with a decent scope will do the bizz :clapper:

Yea, I know what you mean Wuzzy, but I was in an old shed complete with wood burning stove which I fired up and I was shooting from a small side window, the gun was quite warm to the touch (I really get that stove going mate :D ). I don't have any means of testing power but I sighted the 79, target on wooden plank at approx 20yds, the pellets bounced of with very little penetration and very lttle pellet distortion :( . I know at that range my old Meteor would have very likely passed through the plank or at least been lost deep within the wood, do you know what the average ft/lb of the xs79 should be mate? :hmm:
