Hi Dunc, I have a 2 year old GWP Dog (my first GWP after a couple of Springers)and I can confirm that they mature quite late, are a real challenge for a novice trainer but are well worth the effort. Smart, fearless (can be a problem)and has endless energy. I have had a couple of injuries because he doesnt know when to stop when the cover is just too thick, sharp.
At home he is great with the family and loves to be one of the pack but he also needs a firm hand otherwise he takes advantage. Doesn't listen to the wife or kids unless he wants to (bit like me).
I wouldnt go back to springers even
