    hi I have an 8 month old Lab (dog), his basic training seems to be going quite well as he will sit, stay, recall and walk to heel on the lead. However, I'm not sure if I may have a couple of problems starting to set in so would like to ask the experienced trainers for their advice. Retrieving - to date I have only really practiced retreiving twice a week, limiting it to 3 retrieves a session. The dog will chase and pick up but then isnt really that interested in coming back to me as he would rather play with it, shake it, chew it etc (which worries me). I havent snatched anything o

    Im no expert but this worked for me: 1. Put your dog on a rope slip lead 2. Sit the dog at your side and start to walk forwards 3. Each time he rushes ahead of you, make an 'about turn' and start walking in the opposite direction 4. Keep persistently turning 180 degrees every time the dog moves ahead, this may be extremely frequent to begin with Soon the dog will simply give up becasue they dont like this game and would prefer to keep going forwards than switching direction every couple of seconds. As soon as you see the dog is complying add the word 'heel' after the turn

    Watched a gun dog display by Adrian Slater the other week at the Raby Castle game fair and he gave a top tip........buy paint rollers to use as retreiving dummies, cheaper alternative to the normal dummies plus they are furry. I just bought 3 of the smaller ones from Tescos for 50p! A lot of you might have already heard of this but thought I'd share it all the same. PS It was the first gun dog display I have been to and thought that Adrian and his team were excellent.

    Thanks for the good advice skycat, much appreciated. I didnt think I was pushing him beyond the basics for his age but maybe guilty of being too hard on him or expecting too much too quickly. Its probably more my fault (over enthusiasm on my behalf) than his. A total new environment for him to explore. You just get carried away, especially when he was being so obedient in the garden (his normal environment which he is used to). I think it will be best to take him back to the garden just to brush back up on those basics/ engrain them and gradually introduce him part on a lead to the grassy

    I've got a 4 month old lab (dog). His basic obedience training is going quite well. He will sit, stay, wait, return and progressing well walking to heel both on and off the lead. The majority of his training has been done in the back garden, with little or no distractions. However the garden isnt all that big and I have started to take him out onto a grassed strip of land around 300 - 400 yards long, not far from my house.     Didnt manage to get out over the weekend as got called out to work I did manage to pop and get another few flocked crow decoys though and a crow/rook caller (Acme). Should hopefully get to go out this weekend.....will keep you all informed. Going to dry the rabbit with my decoys and caller and put any dead birds on the rotary. Mind you the Acme caller sounds more like a duck, think I need a bit more practice with it!! (seems quite a high pitch 'squark' if you know what I mean??) Thanks for the help.

    Theres a field on my permission which is currently getting pestered by crows and rooks. It isnt safe to shoot this field (s**s law ) as there is a village church, footpath, playing field and primary school on its boundaries. However I can set up in the corner, in the neighbouring grassed field, beneath a large tree and close to the flight path over. Thing is not sure which is the best plan of attack as I only have one full bodied flocked crow decoy, but have twenty flocked pigeon shells on springs, a rotary and a set of hypa flappers.     Same kinda thing happened to me, gave the stock a good rub down with boiled linseed oil, let it soak over night and polished off the next morning seemed to do the trick. Thanks for the advice Fenbo, was a bit concerned as the stock has a gloss oil finish, I think (Beretta 682 Gold E Sporter), so not sure whether I would do more damage than good.

    That good news cab09, it's a relief once you can trust them to be clean in the crate no? I'd suggest you increase the crate compartment gradually as the pup grows, as last week I increased the space my pup has and probably gave her a bit too much room in her XL crate and the first thing she did was take a crap in the far corner of the crate .     Since using my shotgun last season in both the rain and snow I have noticed slight stains on the stock. I dried the gun thoroughly after each time i used it, but not sure whether or not this has occurred when it has dried outside in the field itself after a heavy shower. I have tried waxing and also the Ballistol oil wipes - both give the stock a good shine and appearance but when I tilt it slightly and in certain light conditions I can still see the stainings/ marks.....has anybody got an ideas on how I can remove them?? [i know its a gun and it should get dirty and knocked about but I

    Just a quick update - took newspaper out of crate and compartmented the crate. Things going really well now, he goes out last thing at night and then first thing in the morning an no accidents in the crate or house! thanks everyone for all your help and advice, looks like we might have cracked it....

    Thanks for all the good advice. Im going to take the newspaper out of the crate and away from the backdoor and limit his crate to sleeping only..............fingers crossed. I'm not really sure what this raw feding thing is all about but will start reading up on it.

    i know what you mean...I take him out at 11.00-11.30pm and set the alarm for 5.00am.... back to bed and then up at 6.15.......I'm like a walking zomby at the moment! Thanks for the help and advice, it seems to be working for people. Thing is now, do i keep as is i.e. bedding and newspaper and take him out at the times above or change it to a compartment and still take out at the times above?? I think he is doing well at the moment...last night only a small pee on the newspaper and he went outside fisrt thing this morning for the other??

    He's a 10 week old lab (today). Been feeding him on Beta Puppy (lamb+rice) as recommended by breeder. He has 4 meals a day at set times, last one at 8.00pm. His food is left down about half an hour before its removed. I take him out last thing and he usually does his business then, plus same routine first thing on a morning. He's trained on the newspaper in house and now trying to train him on newspaper outside. Generally not too bad. just now and again he does it in crate during night and was wondering whether or not i was doing something wrong by not comparmenting it off.

    I have read a few artciles on the use of crates for puppys. Nearly every article tells you to limit the size of the crate/ compartmentise it so that the pup is comfortable i.e. can lay, stand up and turn around etc. which is to stop the pup emptying itself in the crate. What happens during the night when the pup is in there for longer periods? The pup wont be able to 'hold it' for say a minimum of 6 hrs during the night and will no doubt dirty their bed area and get distressed.     Beneath the flightpath on the land I shoot is a field with rape, approx 2-3 inches growth. Approx 150 yards to the side it borders a field which was recently sown with wheat, which is just starting to show. Further along the flightpath (approx 400-500 yards) is a field which has recently been sown with peas, land which I dont have permission to shoot. I have been watching the pigeons recently and they are flighting over my fields which contain the wheat and rape and landing directly into the fields which have the peas (a road separates the land).     Thanks for the info guys......I didnt think anyone was going to reply! Its strange as a number of people have mentioend to me that a flapper can be better than a magnet...cheaper too. Lampshy you are lucky to have a teacher, im finding it difficult to learn from books etc but you got to start somewhere I suppose.

    Just thought I'd get peoples views on which Magnet to buy and with which decoy set? I've seen a number of magnets...ultra-lightweight, professional, ones with dead bird cages, the list seems endless! Then there's the decoy set....Air-Pro or Hypa-flappers! I've heard the Air-Pro are'nt that realistic but also the Hypa-flappers are fragile and prone to a good wind?? Any recommendations or views?? Thanks for the help
