I agree with Sterry, go and knock on doors, all the permissions I have were gained face to face, in my experience turning up with a letter for a farmer to sign is much less hassle for them than having to sit down and write a reply to a letter from a person they've never met. It will also give them a chance to express any concerns they might have and for you to give any neccasary assurances.
