funny thing is most these walking lads that end up going out in moter for 1st time love it and the folowing season they have sold there collie x etc(no offence to lads that use them)and bought there selves a bull x because unless your a rabbit man its the only way to TEST a dog to the max by putting TESTING ammounts of game infront of them consistently imho

  3. No Mate not you what ryeuken said! Im using my phone so cant see or put clips up but when im near a computer ill put the clip up im on about to show you! If they can do that damage to each other at the same weight then they could destroy a dog 1/4 of their size!!

it wasnt aimed at you mate

  4. I think the only people who know the answer to this, is the guys who have done all 6 species, from down south to up north and back.

And i bet there aint too many of them.......

I think a better opinion is formed also when the same dog has been used on all six species. Kinda helps to evaluate the pro's and con's of each species  . In the daytime i might add.....You can only really tell how a deer runs in the daytime. :victory:

    JMHO...JD

And its a real opinion, daytime, no matter what quarry will always test your dog to its limits.. And, like you say mate, there wont be many dogs about that have done it..

in my opinion id say this is true but not for the toothed quarry ive found they are alot of dogs that would take foxes preban in the daytime but not run up a beam and do it alone in the dark :icon_eek:

just a quik one does anybody know if there as ever been A DOG that could take red stags daytime or even lamping if there as been must have been some dog as ive watched them red on youtube and they are awesome :laugh::laugh:

    very good thread lads

  5. Whenever i obtained new ground i would always look for anywhere a bit higher ie banks hills etc,

anywhere water wont settle and make the earth ( well lets just say not so cosy )

Im not saying you wont find them in wet horrid places but think like a fox and you will normally come up trumps.

Be prepared for many a mile walking thru thick n thin dragging your kit n terriers but dont give in.

Or you can be a lazy git like me and let 30 hounds and a landrover do the work for you!!

Thinking back to the old times i think it was a better test of man n dog before i got involved with the hunt,

Its a young mans game trying to find them without hounds and i have spent many a day dragging my kit up n down acres of land without so much of a sniff but i have never forgotten my roots and never will.

Like i said if you can think like a fox you will find them.

    all the best laner

    good on ya mate

  6. hi pal give us an in sight to wat you hunt in canada

Well, i really like big game. We spend Oct to Dec bowhunting for whitetail deer. First week of Nov is our annual shotgun hunt for deer. This is a lot of fun. All the neighbours, about a dozen of us get together and chase the deer all week. We usually get 15 to 20 in that time. It's basically a cull to try and cut the numbers down.

August is Bear hunting time. Me and my youngest boy prefer our 12ga for this. My oldest boy uses his .270.

We do a little bit of rabbit hunting after deer season but the snow usally gets too deep by Feb. There's plenty of ducks and geese but we don't hunt them. Also lots of foxes and coyotes but we rarely hunt them either. The only time we shoot them is when were deer hunting and the opertunity presents itself. Spring time is Turkey season. Lots of fun and very challenging. Hunting over here is a lot different than in the UK. Our seasons are much shorter and bag limits much smaller than yours. On the plus side, there is plenty of ground available. Over here you just knock on doors and ask for hunting permission and i've never heard of anyone paying for permission. In our area i hunt only a small percent of the ground that is available to me. I have a brother that lives in Texas so i try to get down at least once a year for Hogs or varmints. I've been on a pheasant shoot in North Wales and i've stalked Roe deer in Scotland. I'm very interested in the way things are done in the UK. I guess it's in my genes! (Born in Bedford) My goal is to go after Muntjac and CWD next year. Hopefully try Ferriting for rabbits some time and lamping for Foxes. Also very interested in hunting Munty's with dogs. There's a whole world of experiences out there. Hopefully i can get a few in before my time is up!

sounds like you have lots of fun mate

  10. I THINK IT DEPENDS ON HOW YOU WANT YOUR TERRIER TO WORK, PERSONLY I LIKE A DOG WITH GOOD BONE, PLENTY OF DRIVE THAT CAN HANDLE HIS QUARRY WHEN NEEDS TO HOLD HARD, I LIKE THEM TO BE SPANABLE BUT IVE HAD TERRIERS LARGER THAT HAVE GET TO THERE QUARRY, TAKES THEM A BIT LONGER BUT ALWAYS GOT A RESULT. I HAVE SEEN SMALLER SIZE TERRIERS BOSSED ABOUT AND GET PUNISHED FOR ITS EFORTS. JUST MY OPINION BUT DO PREFERRE STRONG TERRIERS  YIS ALLI

i would agree alli mate small types are ok if they game even then they can come unstuck

  11. Gentlemen i dont hunt hounds been to a meet once or twice but thats about it but from my view point all of this out crossing is just hound/dog development and its what men have always done. People outcross like this in search of a hound/dog that does a particular job better than breeds that exist and can i just say good luck to them i hope they reap the rewards of their adventurous spirit. and likewise for the hound fraternity those dyed in the wool stalwarts of the beautiful hound i commend you for your loyalty and purest ideals,

I hope we are all joined in the pursuit of our sport and when im out with my ferrets and little lurcher i can appreciate the shooter down the hill working his spaniel after pheasant or the hunt thundering over the valley below, and when im on the hill beating with my gundog after grouse i can appreciate the awe inspiring site of setters and pointers working with falcons over the next moor.

and at the end of the day when im just sitting with a numb backside on a frozen dry stone wall i can just breathe in that cold air and look at some of the most beautiful countryside in England.

    Merry Christmas boys

well said stroller mate merry christmas to you and ALL
