I am looking forward to next season . But over the summer I go ratting with the ferrets . Most of the time I go out a get 5 rats. I will tired to get some pics up of my big jill killing rats . she has had 50 big rat over the last few weeks and loads of baby rat . She has only been bit once because there was 6 rats under the hay bile so I put 2 more ferret down .

Does anyone else use there ferrets for ratting . ;)

weils disease is awful. the ferrets have it on thier paws and then when you handle them it gets on your hands without you even knowing and then you wash your hands but there might still be some traces of weils on your hands and then you open a cupboard or something then it is on the cupborad and then you have a sandwich and die!

Nothing wrong with ratting with ferrets ;) As long as you use your head A jill of mine which philg now owns Was entered into a rat sett and bolted aropund 30ish rats only got bit once and that was because it was a stop end. If the ferrets got the knack then why waste it ;)

Im sure millet will have something to say about this.

:laugh::laugh: It never hurts to be cautious but seriously :rofl:

Look up the signs and symptoms of Weils deisease (leptospirosis) in google.

You should always wash your hands after every time you handle the furts anyway, so the risk is very minimum.

And get yourself some of those antiseptic surface wipes to do your hands untill you get home and have bedded down the furts then wash them again.

In all my life ive only ever once heard of anyone who has had Weils disease, and by his own admission his hygiene with the rats was terrible (Remember Traps :D ).

No terrier work or trapping rats would ever get done if we all worried about a bit of urine getting onto our hands

ai fair point

I no what you mean ferreting king . Because my mate dog got bit and it swelled up . People say that a rat bite it is as bad as getting bit by a fox

I would never put a small ferret down with rats because the bigger the ferret the bigger the teeth it has got so one bite will do more damage :good:

what are the symtoms of this killer and can you get it still of ratting with dogs

Trouble is the symptoms are common to a lot of diseases:

An infection of leptospirosis resembles a cold or influenza infection in the initial stages. The incubation period is from 4 to 10 days, depending on the method of infection and your susceptibility. Not all exposed persons catch the disease.

Early symptoms are fever, chills, muscular aches and pains, loss of appetite, and nausea when lying down. These can easily be mistaken for influenza, menengitis or the classic physician's excuse, 'FUO' or Fever of Unknown Origin.

Later symptoms include bruising of the skin, anaemia, sore eyes, nose bleeds and jaundice. The fever lasts for approximately five days, then a significant deterioration follows.

It's spread by rats through there urine and the bacteria can stay alive anywhere where it's damp for quite a while after it's got there. It can enter your body through cuts or membranes like your eyes, mouth and nose.

Not very nice at all.

I've known of two people who have contracted Weils Disease on separate occaisions, both via contact with water, whilst working on fish farms. It really hit them, they didn't get back to work for at least 6 months.

The sypmtoms of Weils Disease is flu like and if untreated will lead to jaundice and then liver failure. Worth letting the doctor know that it's possible you've come into contacts with rats if feeling unwell. If in doubt ask your doctor for a blood test as it will show up whether you've come into contact with weils disease or not.

All The Best,
