Hancock Pup

Despite the argument for or against Hancock Lurchers.

Did anyone get a pup from a litter born on 13/9/08 sired by John Dog out of a bitch named Tilly.

5/8 collie 3/8 Greyhound.

I have had over the years collie/greyhound/deerhound.collie /greyhound/whippets.

Never have i experienced a bitch like this,usually i have found collie crosses gamely reasonably easy work with.

After checking pedigree i saw that there is beardie/border collies in it.

Other collie crosses i have had have been only border collie plus sighthound.

Am i missing something here,dont want to blame the dog over something that i might or might not be doing.

Need advice people,bitch is being well socialised handled and is very standoffish.

We are on a long line now play training retrieving,she seems almost sulky.

To hop over a 12inch lip to the dog pen is almost beyond her,obviously i leave her to suss it out.

I have trained alot of dogs over the years,and most collie crosses i have had to stop from jumping too high too young.

I am used to feedback from a dog,you can imagine im a bit pi**ed off.

I decided like alot of people that to be certain of what i was buying,i would get a Hancock.

This topic was not posted to get a load of abuse from Hancock haters,you have to try a thing before you knock it.

Just hoping someone out there might have a pup from this litter,or have experience with this type of cross.

The Beardie in it will make it quite a different dog,they can sometimes be alot harder to train and very wary of strangers and very head strong.

Ive had 2 bred same way from Hancock and they was 2 completely opposite dogs, one was a real pain the other i didnt know she was there!

Both were good workers thou so i wouldnt give up

You are right wary,headstrong i would say but in a major trust issue sorta way.

I hate animals that sulk and are moody,you are always wondering what the hell!

She comes over as almost thinking too much.Going to get the dog in as i think she maybe getting too much dog company and not enough me input.

At the moment i blame me for this,so im going to rethink this out.

I am a colliex fan, ive 3 and a bitza with collie in it. All were easy to train, and good temp. Alot can be a bit sensitive, but so are quite few lurchers of any x, even some bullxs.? All my colliexs were home bred by mates, and were socialised as soon as there eyes were open, and till they left they left the litter. The prob with some Hancock pups, he as that many, that he carnt give the time to all the pups that he as. So you will get some temp probs. I am not saying all , but more chance there than because , of his situation he is in. Regards your pup, you have got to Bond with it, as best as you can, one to one no , and as you say keep it on its own.

You are right hancock doesnt handle them enough,she was odd to begin with.

summat desent was she this way from the start? or just when you started her play training?

All my dogs have been trained so that they enjoy doing what i ask,it isnt an order it should be a partnership.

I know some people prefer to fear a dog in to doing what they want it to do,i disagree.

The dog was odd from the beginning,i put it down to lack of handling,the tatooing of the dog at a young age,being innoculated soon after that.

A million and one things god knows.

I was asking for advice,some of us out here dont claim to know everything.

my 1/2 cross was wary of strangers until the day he died, he was a pleasure for me to own but he lived in from day one and was bonded like super glue to me he was hard work to train in some aspects of training but easy in others in fact he was undoubtedly the best trained dog I have owned,

 

My first 3/8 5/8 was by Enoch and has always been a people dog and has the best and most stable temperament of any dog I have owned well trained and easy to train she picked things up first attempt and it stuck straight away again bonded like glue but again lived in from day one,

 

and my youngest again a 3/8 5/8 sired by Tweedle Dum very affectionate with people she knows well, but will slink away from strangers has not been the easiest bitch to train and will still not retrieve to hand at 3 1/2 years old but again lived in and sticks like glue

 

all have been fair workers none world beaters but all have suited me for what I have wanted them for not the gamest of dogs and more suited to rabbit hare and feather rather than bigger quarry although the 1/2 cross would take the occasional fox if one got up in the beam but I have no doubt that had he been tested day in day out on fox he would of jacked as it was he never got run when sore so never had the reason to jack

 

My friends 3/4 BORDER x greyhound was a much easier dog to live with from day one and always been outgoing and easy to train

hi there mate i my self have a hancock pup shes 8 mounth now and a handful in the house not done that much with her but she is very freindly with other dogs and people just started taking her out the odd night and it was natural for her on rabbits showed her a nice easey one in the beam and that was it. dose yours live in or out and do you have anyother dogs that wud make a diffrence.

Had her with my older bitch,who is really obedient,great bitch she is great with pup plays with her etc,it is a people thing.Im bringing her in during day to potter about with me ,ill stick her out at night.I will stick a photo up of her,lovely article.
