I used to think before that this would be some serious cross if someone ever managed it some how. I would think that it would be a seriously intelligent hunter with massive stamina and prey drive. Possibly hard to train and a lot of work would have to go in to teaching it not to kill farm animals but i would say it would be a great animal.

What do you think?

if crosses like these diddnt happen years ago we would not have the live stock today every lineing should be considerd before doing. but give the bloke a chance !

we have breed dogs for thousands of years so they become more intelligent and more person friendly! the wolf is neither in the way we are used to.they would be crap for any where with out thousands of acres.its ok 2just giving them a go but you would be stuck with maybe 8 dogs to bring up and if they were crap what would you do with them?

It only came into my head because I was watching a programme lastnight about lads crossing husky bitches with a wild male wolf and they would use the hybrids In movies to play the part of wolves as they are easier to to train.

Ah It was just a thought

;) never be ashamed of your thoughts :icon_redface: just dont share them too much :D

A friend of mine had a straight wolf and some pups off her to a Malamut. The wolf was timid and shy very wild only he could get near her. The cross pups were fairly tame but sort of mean. They would bite you to say hello and sneak up and grab your hand or leg then run away. He bred them further down as 1/4 breds which he liked more but still pretty useless but more friendly they turned out to be not so steady with stock. He now has no wolfs or cross breds and I asked him and he would not own another. Says he was young and dumb and needed to tame a wild animal which could never really be done.

what prey drive would a wolf have. they are wild and only hunt when hungry. how could you slip one on 20/30 rabbits a night and when a hare pulls away the wolf will give up. wild animals save energy and dont run willy nilly. no good what so ever to a lurcher!!

If trained right theyd f**king be the best beast you could ask for. It would be so funny if the breed came to be all the guys with bull crosses would be ditching their dogs and getting the wolf lurcher so there c**ks would get that bit bigger.

Seriously a 1/4 wolf 3/4 grey is something id like to see in action in the hands of a veteran Hunter.

I'm a bit pissed off your bull cross owner baiting has'nt paid off

It would be no use mate. Wolf crosses have been tried and tested and proved to be unsuitable for any work. They tried to improve upon the GSD and Belgian Shepherds to make dogs for police work. People created Canadian Timberwolf crosses - the Saarloos Wolfdog is one breed created, the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is another. Now they are recognised breeds, not crosses. A wolf cross is much wilder.

Wolves are wild animals. Dogs are domestic. Wolves cannot be tamed in the same way dogs can, even when raised from cubs. They are very shy, and very wild. They need intense socialisation to control their timidity. They need more meat in the diet, and have hugely stronger pack instincts (and even a domestic dogs instincts are very strong). So much so that it is very hard to stop any % cross from marking in the house, if it was to be house trained.

Wolves and wolf crosses are incredibly intelligent, incredibly. But its not collie intelligence, like doing tricks for you, its survival wild intelligence.

They don't have the same will to work or desire to please you as a dog does, and if you got a wolf cross to lamp, you can be guaranteed you wouldn't see the rabbit again once it caught it. The dog just wouldn't understand giving the rabbit to you. He caught it. They think differently. More sensibly than your average dog if you think about it.

Recall is a near impossibility, with distractions anyway. You couldn't chance letting a wolf dog off lead unless its a completely secure field. Even then you'd likely have a hard time getting him back, maybe not though.

You can get "wolf hybrids" in the UK and Ireland, but they are MUCH lower % wolf crosses than the people say they are. A "half wolf" is usually about a 6th or an 8th even. This is misleading then to people who owned them who will tell you "well we had a high % wolf cross and he was just as sweet as a normal dog". Then, if you do actually happen to get a 1/2 cross, you're in for a shock.

The term hybrid is technically incorrect, as wolves and dogs are genetically identical.

Especially for someone whos used to just keeping lurcher type dogs, a wolf cross would be unmanageable. A male working line GSD or Doberman is even too much for a lot of people.

Wolf crosses are not aggressive, but more likely to be fear biters.

Some people think a wolf cross would be a brilliant guard, but no. Thats a dog thing. A wold cross is more likely to run away than protect. You see, in a real pack, the leader protects the pack, not the other way around. The lower members look to the alpha for protection. This is true with dogs too. Your dog needs protection from you much more than people realise. When a dodgy dog comes up to you on a walk, you must stand between it and your dog, and beat it away with a stick if necessary. Your dog will feel much safer in your presence and will work better.

With that said, wolf dogs are extremely loyal.

The pack structure enforcement is constant with a wolf cross. Its tough going, but you can't give them an inch.

You cannot say, however, that a wolf cross is unstable, or "mental", because they are simply displaying their natural behaviours. Wolves are naturally timid. They are just wild animals, completely unsuited to the average home. True, they can be turned "mental" by bad handling and stupid idiots, very easily, more so than an average dog. A lot of idiots don't even socialise normal dogs properly, with wolf dogs it is an absolute huge must.

You need a deep understanding of wolves to be able to cope with a wolf dog.

So in conclusion, a wolf dog would be a terrible idea for a working cross. It would be a waste of a life. Wolves should be free among their own pack.

Stop me! :clapper: open forum :D

I know this breed wouldnt workout because its part wild. but the physical attributes the wolf would bring would be decent. Pity it could probably never be trained properly ;)
