why you so hostile Glyn did  some one eat all your chocolates ? I don't keep any fancy blood lines so you wouldn't have herd of them, are you and foxdropper the same guy as I seem to have upset you both with a couple of questions. I will  leave you to it as it has been a good thread, and I don't want to spoil it.

Not upset anybody mate ,we are discussing lines of dogs therefore ill tell you mine ,what you make if it us your problem .I started with 3 old style Nuttal bitches and looked for a rough type dog to put over them arriving at a wheeler bred pup I ran on before it proved it's worth then I covered all 3 bitches with him and their offspring there after with him and a son of his .Bitches were very bully as were the father .I've introduced NS stuff for no other reason than to steady it up which straight away reduced size and jaw but by breeding to an excellent dog I had that was rectified within a generation ..Im nearly at the end of it now ,not because I've ran out of options but because my back is knackered..Ill still get out with others locally who have my stuff but I'm done breeding here at the house.

Now what do you keep and whats so special about it .!

If breeding terriers or any working animal was as easy as some profess wouldn't we all have a yard of workers ? I've only had one lifetime,  I'm no expert but I can tell you what I've come to kno

i've been lucky enough to chat about breeding with some of what i class as greats worker breeders of the type i like , but as Dillydog has said we only have the one life time, i've had my own terriers

Exactly,  you can eliminate all the luck factors,  you can go to the legends with their legendary dogs and bitches and still produce shit.  I'm with you 100% in taking the guess work out of breeding a

I don't have a line off terriers. None of my terriers are related. Terrier bitches that are grafters and work like dogs are few and far between.

They are there though.

Men that have them don't broadcast it.

If you want to take a litter out of a bitch that needs to be bred from. You need to put a dog over the bitch that is superior to the bitch.

Easy said if you've a bitch that's an out an out grafter.

Lines is one thing, without solid bitches, your only taking a chance.

When pups are born and gifted out that's when the cream comes to the crop! Some people can't run dogs on and that's it.

Simple.

Is it a fluke that anything that I've been gifted worked and others didn't?

Breeding has a lot to do with it, you can give a wanker the best bred pup and it will amount to nothing.

There's a curs  on every litter no matter how much breeding is in them and no matter how good the parents were worker to worker or best to best as some say.

There are lines that have very high % of workers and in the right hands continue to do so .

Lines arnt necessarily kept going from well known original stock ,they can be started from scratch with decent  enough stuff being a mix of all that' gone before .Lad I know has a very distinctive line of blacks going back 25 years to Lakeland x black and a dog I gave him .Anyone can do it with the right mindset and vision but you need good mates on-board that are willing to forsake other types in favour of what you breed to get anywhere .Key words are honesty ,work and more work .

Yes I know Chesney having the right blood surely does help, all I'm trying to say is it takes the right person to be running that blood on properly.

I've only had one lifetime,  I'm no expert but I can tell you what I've come to know is fact..........

No ones got the answer !  We're all just guessing and we're all still learning.  Granted some are having more LUCK than others.  From what I've seen I'd say the breeding IE the dogs naturel ability is the key too consistent workers but socialising and giving them time to learn on the job without being pushed is the difference between average and good.

And for my two pennies worth I'm a follower of a bitch line, I'd never use a sub standard dog but surely no one should be using one either. To say one brings more to the table than the other is nonsense,  but 100% of a  bitches mitochondrial DNA is passed to her pups, where as none of the mitochondrial DNA from a dog is passed.......dose that make me sound like I know what I'm talking about  ?

All I genuinely know is this, be honest with yourself about what you have,  if your bitches are right, your dogs will follow
