But yourself a good book, something like, Emma Ford, The Art & Practice Of falconry, Revised Edition.

This will help you get your head around some of the issue's and requirements to keep & house a BOP.

The flight should be as large as you can possibly make it, so what ever spare ground you can use up.

You could get away with a 6'x6'x7' high, but ideally longer if you can make it that. Leave about a third of the roof open/cover with mesh for the bird to weather in, if you cannot sit it out on a bow perch on a daily basis. The point of the roof being open allows the bird to weather, get went when it chooses and also get the goodness of the sun, as this helps with vitamin production.

Ideally find someone close to you & see if they will act as a mentor to you.

You will be looking at spending around £1000 over the price of the bird, to set yourself up, by the time telemetry comes into the equation, thats another £500, Scales are a must, so they will cost anywhere upto £100, depending on where you but them, but you can convert kitchen counter balance scales or digital ones to use...................Never use the spring dial type, as these are very unreliable.

Hi.. another couple of things for you to consider are how you are going to feed the bird. Most people buy in frozen and add caught rabbits etc as a perk of hunting. You can buy the frozen chicks, quail and hamsters easily but you'll need a freezer to store them in.

Also an avian vet.. this is a bird specialist as you dont want to be going to the local 'dog doctor' with a sick bird as he/she simply wont have the training and you're running a huge risk of failing to get a fast & correct diagnosis.

hey

I agree with all previous comments, especially the one about the getting a good falconry book. A great simple to read basic book called falconry the essential guide by steve wright is a good start. Another thing you could do is see if your local falconry centre offers bird of prey managment courses or will allow you to do some volunteer work, iv been working at a falconry centre as a volunteer for three years now and the experience it has given me is invaluable. books can teach you all the methods but the hands on with people already practising is huge advantage.
