A reliable Marking Dog,..is a massive tool in the pro-rabbiter's armoury.

The action of marking an occupied warren (or other hiding place), of a particular quarry, is childish simple for most canines,..however,..only a few lurchers are ever allowed (or requested) to undertake,.. this useful task...

It's all down to what you want from a dog...?

Your right in what you say and nothing disheartens an owner as much as a pup marking when you not out ferreting and just walking the dog. It’s heart breaking and extremely frustrating but there you go. It’s that time of year now to be very selective where I walk. Going be long summer

I think that dogs can learn when to mark and when not too. When I’ve got the ferrets my dogs are pretty useful markers..but when I’m not ferreting I don’t really want them marking a hole until I arrive. When I’m bushing my dogs will offen ignore holes, as they know they’re hunting up for stuff on top.
