An article about this years wolfhunting in Sweden, bias by animal rights activists. They are going to try to shoot about 70 wolves of a population of about 500 most of the animals are this years cubs so it has only minor effect on the population. The Scandiavian  wolf are the same as the europen so they are not endangered.

how, in the world of wolves only the alpha couple in any pack breed?

Maybe if one dies it could be replaced by a dominant young wolf from another unrelated pack? I don't know that much about wolf behavior but they wouldn't just keep inbreeding constantly. As a pack got killed off outside wolves would join them I'm sure.

Young male wolfs can run 1000km in search for a partner and an available area, female young wolfs do also search for new areas. As long as they can find new areas they dont stay in their parents packs, a pack in sweden are most likely a parent couple their last year cubs and their new cubs. The older cubs are going to search for a new revier before the next year.
