I did a few hours in a class 2 totally different mentality driving. Blocking 2 lanes coming up to a roundabout and using the whole roundabout was a shock. Forwards planning is a big thing. I respect hgv drivers a lot now. A lot of car drivers are out for themselves, no using the correct lane or indicating off roundabouts when you could have gone is annoying.

Wagon drivers are terrible for indicating and pulling over at the same time.

I think everyone is out for their selfs it should be a team effort on the roads to help each other to get about.

That's exactly the way you need to see things to be a good driver ?. Every driver needs to play their part . Unfortunately,  less and less drivers seem to understand this.

I've been driving a bin lorry for about 17 or 18  years now . I still do an odd day here and there driving other lorries,  but not often.

Driving a hgv will be a challenge to begin with , but , with a bit of experience,  it'll feel no different to driving your car . I'll swap between , car , hgv , tractor , motorbike,  forklift , pick up , jcb , without even giving it a second thought , it all just becomes second nature after a while.

You already have the right attitude to be a good hgv driver , and you have a desire to have a go , so my advice would be to go for it ?.

Ps , I feckin hate driving .

It is a totally different ball game mate if you don’t think ahead or dither in some situations you will come unstuck very quick and always remember your height because I hate lorry drivers who hit my lovely railway bridges ? to be fair though I hold all licenses including road railer, HGV was the toughest test, under pressure is the best way to describe with matey and his clipboard breathing down your neck ?

Few years ago now when I still lived in England mate, but there was a few lads on the tippers who turned it in because they got fed up with it…..was basically driving out of London sites, getting a tug at the checkpoint they used to have on the lights by the witches hat at Dagenham and copping fines for any stupid thing that could be found……came straight out their own pocket and bang, weeks wages or a good chunk of it down the khazi.

May be different now with driver shortages, firms may cover all that ?

But VOSA is self funding so they have to keep nicking people.

In my other life I was in the office when a fax spewed out of the machine. Basically it was from a couple of VOSA Wombles who had been travelling southbound on the M1 within West Yorks and whilst just within our area, before they got off at J38 to go back north, had stopped a HiLux towing a trailer with another vehicle on. They had escorted it to the weighbridge and found it to be 38kg over GTW.  Attached were their two statements for us to deal with. That meant asking Kent bobbies where the vehicle was from, to go round and interview the driver and company secretary of the vehicle owners, create a file and then summons the driver and company secretary to come up 250 miles to Magistrate's Court. All for 38kg.

Before I got chance to do anything the paperwork accidentallly fell into a shredder.

You are right. The whole traffic department is a sham. They claim that every initiative is to do with road safety when it actually is rooted in revenue collection. And the civilian VOSA Wombles are pinching a living. Our gaffers were falling over themselves to try and instill public confidence in the police while the RT Department were doing everything to alienate the public.

You are 100.% on that. All sensible road policing has all but gone. Vosa  are a bunch of money grabbing b*****ds in my opinion . Still a few decent coppers about mind I got pulled in my tipper and had several minor things wrong the policeman on the bike was sound and let me on way after a few tweaks.treat them like a normal person goes along way I reckon.
