Summer Bream Fishing

You aren’t far from one of the finest specimen tench locations in Ireland. The heaviest I use are 2.25lb tc rods for fishing out at range, otherwise it’s 1.75s. 10lb esp synchro mono.
You could try the heavy rods out and see.
You can buy from specialist gear from www.AnglingDirect.eu and not have to pay import duties. Not a whole pile for sale in Ireland.

Cheers matey, I know how to use the rods I have so they should be fine, I’ll just scale the mainline down a bit from 15lb to 10lb, it’s big open water anyway.

Are you referring to the lakes around Strokestown ?……heard some decent reports, I think an 8lb team has came out this summer ? May be mistaken ?

I have fed off a few shoals of bream over the years lads, they go through bait like you don’t believe……Sandhurst lake at Yateley has a good head.

Dropped on there for a couple of nights when I couldn’t get on The Match or Copse and they went through 40lb of bait like it was nothing !

Paulus, I’ll give you a tip mate, for situations when you want to use a lot of bait or use boiled bait properly for greedy fish like carp, tench and bream you can buy the over runs from the bait companies.

All shapes and sizes and “flavours”, they work a treat with an amino type dip like the old Ambio that Kryston used to sell.

Just give them a coating and away you go and it’s cheap, can’t remember the price but I know they were a bit cheaper than even my field testers rates I used to get so sub £6 a kilo.

Layer's pellets = 60p a kilo. You don't need aminos or flavours for bream imo. Remember that old tv program; Never Mind The Quality Feel The Width?

Forget quality .Rather do 300 lb of 7lb fish than 10 over 10 ?

Filled 3 nets more times than I remember using worm and maggot .

The trip is not to bait a wide area .

The times I’ve seen lads balling in cricket ball sized ground bait in a 10m area then wondering why bites are slow .

You need them competing for food in a small area to get big bags .

The sight of a tip getting dragged round does it for me .I’m used to bullying them by holding the rod high and getting them on their side to come in like a carrier bag .I hold the top match weight for our water in 5 hours of 197 lb .

My method is to whack out 10 large cage feeders of ground bait and maggot plus corn ? then swap down to a smaller feeder .Once the  bream see the small fish on it they are straight there and the games begin. Tench are a bonus and can’t be bullied ?.

In my humble opinion, the problem with concentrating fish into a small area is foul hooking occurs.  My baiting method would depend on the size of the water and quantity and species of fish contained in that water.

That's my view too. Every situation is different. I agree with foxdropper about creating competition, but I like to change my baiting methods to suit the swim, weather and other factors. Thing about my fishing is that I mostly fish totally different venues from one week to the next. One method does not suit all circumstances.

Despite the competition mate ,I can’t remember a foul hook .You need a short tail on the feeder ,no more than a foot or you will deep hook them .Size 8 hook ,worm tipped with maggots i my go to .

Do you not struggle with line bites by condensing into such a tight area mate?

Or do you fish around the edges of them?

You've obviously sussed the method for the water as that is a very decent bag of bream in 5 hours...

The line is clipped for the distance mate and yes I take it back a metre or two after the pre bait .Fishing in about 12 ft water that’s all .

Sessions typically start with small stuff ,skimmers etc then the bream move in which is very evident even without a bite because the area starts bubbling when their  heads down in the silt .Few anglers use dead maggots for that reason but I want them in the silt and kicking up clouds of it .Got to help with competition and playing a fish from the shoal .

Line bites happen but if you know what to look for it’s not a problem .Slow steady pull round is a liner whereas two taps and a fast pull is a fish .

You ever fancy a day in summer mate ,I can take a guest .Good tench fishing in the bay too .
