Maybe its stimulates competetive hormones but rubbing and tickling a ram's head  can too easily  lead to a shoving match.  Before long the ram sees you as a rival rather than benefactor  .....

Always difficult to answer without knowing your system, when and where your lambing& type of ewes. We've just started ped texel flock alongside our commercials (which also have tex tups) What you don't want is big shoulders tup over young or narrow pelvis ewes.

We have a small flock of a zwartble a zwartble Cross Suffolk a mule , a texel cross mule and a herdwick,  a texel has been used on them all before except the herdwick as she's just a lamb I won't tup her till next year,

When I first met my ex mrs she was tossing off sheep. They stick an electric probe up their bums....called an auto ejeculator....this gives em a shock , they then jizz into a cup which is tested for fertility. As it turns out she was an expert at collecting from the local farmers as well. Pm me for the tramps number
