Feel the pain , many years ago I was lamping rabbits in Scotland using  the farmers quad ....great fun speeding  around  in the dark.

Anyway this particular night I had just shot a rabbit next to a fence and as I was leant over picking it up I somehow pressed the throttle and the bike flipped up and landed on top of me.....

Good job my mate was with me to lift it off...anyway I had bruised ribs which took weeks to heal ...

So we have worked out that they love a wander in the sunshine, I pulled up in the back yard and there was bloody loads on the stubble, so the first mission was to get the bike out and run round to the bottom of the field, I took the bike out wide around them and they all headed to the wood/tip drive, I then took the bike back to the bottom of the field and preceded to walk the edge of the wood and push between 70 and 90 birds into the beast field, these then set off up the fence towards the pen, while I was walking the wood I could hear quite a few in it so I went out into the field and back to the bottom, dropped into the wood on the deer track and slowly walked up again, by the time I got to the tip and back out in the field there looked to be the same amount as the first go but this time, much more of a mixed bag of ages, they too hopped the fence and followed the others towards Gordon’s pen. That job done I headed for the oak wood, next doors birds have found the feeder there was about 20 or so around it and there was loads bobbing about in the rape. A quick bomb to the pens to top the feeders up and then over to the piggeries where there was a small group having a last feed before roost, everything was looking good so I thought I’ll have a run to the bottom ( tree side ) to check the deer traffic, this is where it all went wrong, I came a little to close to the edge of the gutter and I managed to roll the quad into the gutter and into a big pile of stinging nettles, that’s a bloody heavy thing to have on top of you when you are out on your own, my arm still feels like it’s on fire just as I managed to get the bike off me and out the gutter my phone rang, it was one of the members who walks in for me, so I reloaded the quad and headed to Gordon’s pen where we watched to see what came in, by the time it got to 7pm they were coming in from all angles, which I was very happy to see

I haven’t had late birds , but pheasants like to come down from roost , fill their crop and then loaf about with sun on their backs . 
               It always amazed me that they followed the same hedges and tracks , year in year out . The thing is that now the nights are getting longer and the temperature dropping they will hunt out the sunny spots . The shoot I keepered was a north facing bowl,  so as the year went on there was literally no sun at all and the birds went over the road . I tried everything from dogging them back to sewelling , but once the birds want to go somewhere you can’t stop them and they would just get up and fly over me . 
             In the end I didn’t bother too much about dogging in or chasing them , your time is better spent on water and feed , and pest control. Have faith , they will return to roost .

I was just talking about the very same thing to the shoot captain, this bank gets the sun all day and every year that’s where they want to be, same as in the winter they want to be over the piggeries because it’s warm

It's all common sense really, I compare animals to humans.

If it's nice sunny weather we are all outdoors grabbing the sunshine but if its wet and cold we are indoors in the warmth and dry .....animals no different.

I know what you mean mate. I've done krav maga for last 5yrs & been doing jujitsu for a year. Christ, I'm in pieces some mornings after. 21yr olds there that could get knocked through a wall & probably just want go get a selfie of it!!

I’ll have to stop setting my lip up to you, a lad I know does that and his party trick is saying punch him and before you know it he’s dropped you to the floor and you have no idea how, he’s a skinny weedy fu*ker as well ( bugger I’ve just done it again ) he did a bit of cage fighting but stopped because he wasn’t allowed to proper hurt them

I hate quads, nearly lost one down the side of a Scottish hill with a big hind on the back!

The shouldn't have handle bars but a steering wheel instead.

Bloody dangerous and when it rains you get soaked. Junk.

If I had a shoot to look after I'd ask for an old jimney!

If nettles stings are bad take a sprig of thistle, lay it in the crotch of your pants and pull them up quickly. No more nettle stinging!

Jimney or gator thing. Anything with a cab and wheel.

 

I know. Lads get used to them but they have no heater!

I rode to work in winter for years. Not doing it again!
