I think what wilf is saying and what your failing to grasp is that though benifit scroungers are an 'enemy' they are so totally inconsequential, like the railworkers.....yet we are conditioned to hate

Question, how does a railwayman, a working bloke like you, getting an extra few quid effect you exactly ? And if it makes you half an hour or and hour late helping him get an extra few quid, wasn

That would be me. All the way.

Losing public support very quickly due to pissing everyone off trying to go about their daily life.

You do realise it’s folks like you who help these government pricks take the piss out of us more and more each day don’t you ?

If they’re working early/late and  weekends then I’d say they’re worth it. I wouldn’t be working Friday and Saturday nights till midnight for less than that, would you? And if the station workers are on a lot less, taking the brunt of the public’s frustration at the rubbish overpriced service, and dealing with all the pissheads on a weekend, then I’d give them £40k too.

Have you been to a London station late at night ?? Loads of spades standing around, doing what they do best ,uck all!

With respect spend a a weekend on the p-way Walt changing rails sleepers switches and crossings under a time constraint and you will think a lot differently, and I’m speaking from experience some new starters can’t even push a shovel into ballast it’s graft, don’t be fooled by what you hear in the media at the moment we were the good guys in the pandemic key workers now were the bad guys apparently because we want a fair pay rise and our T&Cs and jobs protected.

Bit like old bill, odd good un ,and no dig at you ,we all want fair pay and treatment,

Me 100%, theres RMT members on barely above minimum wage working 12 hr shifts 7 days a week to keep a roof over their heads its not all about the drivers

The trouble with the public and a few of the lads on here is they don’t realise how fragmented the railway is the freight operating companies FOCs the TOCs train operating companies network rail maintenance and operations the cleaners the contractors I could go on, but they see a few blokes changing a bulb and that’s it we’re all the same I could quite easily explain why it takes 3 people on a platform up a ladder probably near 25000 AC OHL but I will save it, and I will sit back and watch the ignorant comments.

And saying you’d live like a king on £40,000 why not live like an emperor on £80,000 or so on and so on, no ambition some people.

I work 3 weekends every month 12 hour shifts while the majority of the public are socialising out shooting hunting ect so I’m worth what I earn I believe.

Baker Boy I know you 100% Get it but trying to bring people outside the industry to get it is hard work.

Train driver on £40.000 the average is closer to £60.000.

Tens of thousands of rail workers are taking part in the biggest strike for decades. With inflation increasing to 11%, they want a pay rise to match the cost of living. Find out the train driver salary in the UK and what different companies pay. In 2022, the average train driver salary is £59,864/yr

Average Train Driver Salaries Per Year
  2020 2022
GWR - train driver salary - Cashfloat Great Western Railway £56,773 £60,620
SER - train driver salary - Cashfloat Southeastern Railway £53,620 £57,030
London Underground - train driver salary - Cashfloat London Underground £55,711 £59,732
Arriva group - train driver salary - Cashfloat Arriva Group £60,945 £66,677
london midland - train driver salary - Cashfloat London Midland £54,040 £55,854
virgin trains - train driver salary - Cashfloat Virgin Trains £66,231 £74,151

Try surviving on on a pension of £174 a week. Trouble is with percentages is 100% of f**k all is still f**k all. While a small percentage of a big figure is a good wedge.

Now I'm not talking about the Guys on the shovels I bet they are not on good money but the Driver's to me are taking the piss.

Cheers Arry

I've said it before on here - people on the railway aren't paid for what happens when things all run smoothly - they're paid for keeping it running smoothly and for being able to react when it goes tits up.

......... it can be a really dangerous job and, if its not done right and you cause an accident, you can be spending time in prison - it's not just a bollocking from HR.

One example - there used to be a third rail next to some points in Wembly that had to be clipped. (For those that may not know) A points clip is like a big metal clamp that had to go under and back up onto the rail, right next to the third rail.

Here's some information from NRs website..........

The third rail is probably one of the most difficult dangers to see. It looks just like an ordinary rail, but it carries 750 volts – easily enough to kill you. The DC current that flows through is three times as powerful as your home electricity. It’s designed to send power to the train, but you are 70 percent water and the perfect conductor – it will pull you in and not let go until the emergency services are able to switch the power off.

As for the strikes, good luck to them - at least it's one part of British life that can hit back. It's just a shame that a lot of other workers haven't got the opportunity and power to do it.

The taxpayer subsidises the House of Commons bar to the tune of £6 MILLION pounds every year…….but no, let’s  call rail workers all the c**ts under the sun for asking for a Tiny chunk of the billions the government is pissing away without remorse every year !
No wonder they are able to keep kicking the population in the teeth, it’s just small minded nonsense and it plays right into their hands.
