Old bitch has got cancer

Some of you may remember back in March 21 I had my bitch spayed and a lump removed from her teats.

Another lump has formed and after having a biopsy the result is that it's deffo cancer.  

Vet says we're looking at about a grand to treat/remove it with no guarantee of success.

She will be 12 in about 6 weeks.

I'm monitoring the size and if it's growing quickly it's gonna be a PTS scenario but I'm of the mind to see how she goes over the summer and let her get some sun on her back and then PTS, obviously if she's feeling it I'll do the deed sooner.

I had to do the same,my Kelpie bitch Taz,12 years old and she had a tumor in her stomach,I had 2 weeks to get her PTS,it was rough going ,poor dog,.I hope you get the summer out of her ,best of luck

It's like loosing a kid, I had to do the same kind of thing late last year just enjoy the time you have left, I know how you feel.

But they do become part of the pack sorry about your dilemma Dave, she's had a quality life mind. Problem with cancers is they can be riddled and you only see the surface ones, like you say I'd keep eye on it let her crack on until she can't.

My old deer/grey Lima had mammary tumours for a few years. The vet said as long as they weren't affectecting her, it would probably do more harm than good removing them..

They never really bothered her and the vet monitored them.

Then at just over 12 years old she suddenly went right downhill; wheezing, lost weight, off her food.

Took her back to the vet, the cancer had spread to her lungs, so put her down on the spot.

All dogs are different, but it may be worth getting another opinion before going down the surgery route.

I couldn't put a dog that age through surgery personally...keep an eye on it ,enjoy the time you have left...and do the right thing when you think the time has come Dave mate

I feel for you mate and I hope you get spend summer with her and like been said I wouldn't put her through surgery at that age ,atb

Feel for you mate. As long as she is eating and drinking and getting about okay then I would carry on with her. I have the same dilemma with our 20 year old russell but he still dodders about and seems happy enough. As sid g said to me on another forum, you will know when it's time.

Yes good luck with her. Hard to know what is best. Mine still has a big old lump on his leg but he is happy as can be and physically seems fine at the moment and this well over  a year later. The vets were very enthusiastic to take a knife to him with no promise of success. Glad I didn't and if he ever goes down hill then we will cross that bridge

Yeah, I wouldn't put her through surgery at that age but it's not a bad age for a working dog. Always comes around too quick though.
