The days of adventurers, archaeologists, etc going on digs and bringing treasure out of these countries ended long ago, when we retreated from east of suez. There is still a huge black market in antiquities, but the punishment can be draconian. Theres the old sayings " when in Rome........" and "if you can't do the time.......". In this case, he will probably not serve the full time, he most likely will be released after a while on medical or humanitarian grounds, after the Foreign Office apply a bit of pressure. Cheers. Yeh let's hope so, and get the old bloke out. But as you say, let it be a lesson to other people.
