Using lurchers for other jobs?

I, like you have come to appreciate great working dogs, down the line, when there's been enough time and action to appreciate what you do for each other...

This little girl's had a different start, she's more of a family dog than I've ever owned before and my wife and daughter see that she lives that side to the hilt and it's from that, that I've got to see all her quirks. She has me in stitches most days.

Thing is, in the field I'm equally impressed and so with both sides to her, I can enjoy her even more...

Was she your first saluki blooded dog? I thought i knew a thing or 2 about lurchers before i had a coursing type, in your words it was emotional  and educational.

Yes, New Moon,...Mercedes was a proper Saluki type,.. with that typical Saluki mind set...

Obviously, back in the day,.. I had never seen or handled, a Saluki type lurcher, so,.. I expected 100% ultimate obedience, and an immediate response to my whispered commands,.. and as a keen young Buck, I would countenance nothing less

Truth is, I could write an extensive article, regarding this superlative hunting jukel,...but I'll not bore my fellow posters with my old man's tales, suffice to say,.. by feck,...we took some game together.....

That old bitch was created from a union twixt, a large Heavyweight Race Whippet,.(and back then, the race whippets were undergoing a great change, and had a massive dose of Staffordshire Bull Terrier in their linage..) and her Dam was a Saluki based coursing type,.. much favoured by the travelling community..

Facts were, I owned both Sadie and her sister Willow,.. and  although Willow was a complete pet, we did try her just the one night,  for my own satisfaction...I had gifted her to my Brother in Law, and he was a bit squeamish and loved the brindled bitch with a passion, so we kept things lightweight, and only ran her on three single-handed slips.

Two Hares down and a real nice big Roe Doe, grassed, easy as ya like, convinced me that I had the right blood in my kennels.. So, I bred Sadie (Mercedes ) on four separate occasions, to four different Studs...

All good serious jukels,.. but, I never, ever produced a pup, that was in any way superior to their Dam...

Obviously , I either chose the wrong Studs, or perhaps fate decreed, that Sadie was just too good, too darn lethal,...and was never to be repeated...

No mate she isn't my first either, but I did have them long enough ago not to appreciate their quirks. Though she lives outdoors, it's bringing one into a family environment that's made all the difference for me. Before, they were just working dogs.

Don't get me wrong, some things have been emotional, she's no dream dog, but I can really appreciate her and it certainly is educational.

All mine live in now...they are alot more content and listen better,can take them away,they don't dirty inside or in a motor,I feel I've got a better bond,the kids and Mrs will walk them when I'm at work, before they didn't know the dogs names,or how many I kept

Only downside is the noise if the door goes or ice-cream van comes up the street

You  got a male lurcher as well Paul, or just that lurcher bitch. I've never had lurcher inside. I suppose looking back, old Bryn would have made good house dog, he was laid back, and been no prob. Buck would be a pain in the arse in the house,  could never trust him with any food about,  and I wouldn't leave in the house on his own, if you went out to shops etc, he a fookin chewer = wood, had to wire mesh inside his kennel, know he better of outside out of the way, lol.

The dogs I've been most fond of have never been my best workers, some you just bond with some you don't, in saying that if they didn't graft to a decent standard the bond would of been broke sharpish. Lol.

Never thought I would say it,. or even think in such a way,...but nowadays, I don't really care, if a dog is good at the job or not.

Financially, my status has changed a bit,...not drastically,...(we are still living in our wee terraced house), but, I don't have to worry about keeping dogs solely for work...so,.. its all about the enjoyment, the craic and the good times now..

I have foolishly allowed, my obsessional Life with Lurchers, to rule my entire being, for far too long...

Time to chill out,.. and smell the coffee...

I've only had two dogs I never got along with.

A first cross collie Greyhound that was so bad I can't even remember it's name or what happened to it.

It turned me off collie crosses, perhaps unfairly, for life !

The other was my first and last foray into working terriers; a well bred red fell bitch. I didn't bond with it, and digging holes wasn't my idea of fun, but I gave it a go, try most things once....but never again.

I'll stick to running dogs

Good honest post, nothing good comes from obsessive behaviour, I’ve buried mutts that I never shouldn’t  have  done, the search for the GOAT seems right at the time but comes back to haunt ya l
