SheepChaser 8,082
Side question - is the time of the specialist rabbiting dog long gone and not coming back ? Folk always talk about getting out and starting pups ferreting and on the lamp running easy rabbits ...... other than small patches around the country ....... how viable really is this ? I would imagine if the ban was lifted that a lot of dogs would now be starting with other quarry and never really see many rabbits on their lives. Quote Link to post
Borr 4,490
I think they'll be here until the rabbit is gone. I think maybe whippet terriers might be more popular, but plenty still at rabbits...except me and the lab x lol Quote Link to post

I think maybe whippet terriers might be more popular, but plenty still at rabbits...except me and the lab x lol I do wonder how many really are still hunting them regular with success ? Just got to look ok the ferreting section or air rifle section here, or even on the running dogs. Rabbits are legal quarry and I can’t remember when I last saw anything much of folk out for more than the odd day with 2-6 bunnies. There’s a few places north which have decent numbers but they won’t be long in vanishing now, the super ferreters are all fighting over th spots, keepers blasting them with nv and a 22 for the game dealer, Lurcher lads trying for the last good rabbit bag of their life ..... abs air rifle weirdos in guilli suits acting like they fighting the taliban wirh thermal, night vision and a custom 1 million pound toy gun. The rabbits are screwed 6 Quote Link to post

I thought I watched a vid in Oz, not so long back, where they totally over run with run the feckers the ground just moved with rabbits, not sure if it was new south Wales, might be wrong. If lived in Oz, and had could get to place like that, I spend 3-days there, plenty of dog food, and work for ferrets, and deff lamping for the lurchers I had a bloke from the Mallee district in Victoria call me and reckons they are over run. Bit far away as I'm in NSW and fixing my new place up but thinking about doing a couple of weeks there. Southern NSW and Vic are where most of the running dog people are. I'm happy atm getting a few in the Tablelands NSW. The days of getting three hundred for a long weekend are over I think. Quote Link to post

This was brought home to me one crisp Winter's morning when undertaking a rabbit clearance job... We were ferreting a long hedgerow,.. and doing real well... There was already 38 shushis laid out, all along my side of the hedge, and to anyone turning up, it did look a tad impressive.. My partner was necking rabbits on his side, and he had been chucking his share, over to me. I had decided to leave them in small heaps, to facilitate collection for when we walked back to the truck.. We had fifty plus hedgerows on the Estate, still to treat, and this was going to be a few weeks work,.. and well paid to boot The Farmer cruised up in his new 4x4 and was visibly impressed... "My goodness, that ferreting business is really effective isn't it" he said.. "Yes sir, I did tell you that we do a professional job, we will definitely make a difference, I promise you" The Farmer was leaning out of his window, counting the conies as he drove slowly along the warren... "I suppose your partner has and equal amount on his side of the hedge , eh?" My pal,.. foolishly said,.. "Yes Boss I've got the same on my side"... BIG MISTAKE.... The Farmer said,.. "I'll come on round and take a look at them"... It was, emotional.... I learned a big lesson that day,...never, ever,.. exaggerate or lie, about the quantity of game you catch,...for sure as eggs is eggs,.. that lie will come back to haunt you. All the best lads, and good hunting to you all... Ok I said I'd had 4 it were 3 Sorry Quote Link to post

jukel123 6,570
I really regret not keeping records of game and fish I've caught. My mate has meticulous records going back decades. Friend of mine was employed to clear foxes from a wood which bordered a huge house . He caught a fox and showed it to the owner. He kept bringing foxes for inspection for over a fortnight, racking up his fee the longer he kept at the job. The owner didn't know it was the same fox which was refrigerated every night.
